Some potential assistant coach names to watch

Were the worst program in the acc statistically over last 2 years and we just went out and hired the #1 or #2 assistant in the country where he has had the chance to work under several big time coaches on top of being the son of a name that is borderline basketball royalty.

Out of all of the **** poor hires we’ve seen from this athletic department over the last 2 decades this one doesn’t have me scratching my head in disgust like many others have. Time will tell…

Lucas hire isn't as bad as the J.D. hire for sure.

He needs to bring in a veteran assistant with HC experience like a Mike Brey. If he does that he can succeed. Calipari's assistant that was a HC at Drexel does nothing for me. Won't move the needle for Lucas. He needs someone who has proven he can be successful as a Head Coach IMO. The high school coach from Columbus won't do anything from a coaching perspective either. Needs a big time assistant hire.

Also don't move the goalpost miles back because of the last 2 years. This team went to elite 8 in 2022, and final 4 in 2023. To start the 2024 season they were 11-2, and 2-0 in ACC, then lost in OT to WF as the injuries mounted, and never could recover from that rash of injuries. Every game they basically were missing players and couldn't practice effectively, but even as late as end of January this team still had a good overall and not terrible conference record until wheels fell off in February.

This past season was the disaster obviously, but this program was in a strong position to go hire a proven veteran coach for a quick turnaround if they wanted, and they chose not to. Now we have a coach with no experience being a head coach trying to jumpstart the program again.

BTW, is it me or did this hire create very little buzz? Have basketball ticket sales increased much? I saw a poll on this board where like 80% plus said they weren't going to buy basketball season tickets?

Could you imagine the buzz if you hired a coach like Will Wade? Whew, we would have been right back in the ACC elite category quickly.

It really was out of Rad’s hands. When the CEO (or Chairman of the Board) and COO are personally involved, the middle manager is not actually making any of the decisions.

There’s a lot to criticize Rad for (a LOT), but this hire isn’t one of them.

I mean...

I'm not really going to argue. My suite at the bowl game was just down from Dan's. Guy looked miserable. I know there was some talk of firing him in the offseason, and I also know he was protected by certain guys on the BoT.

So in that regard...yes, Dan is not some super-powerful/controls-every-detail AD at this point in his career. We already know about his living situation and WFH/long-commute accomodations.

I don't think it was out of his hands. But with baseball and basketball, he has clearly made the decision that he is going to take the NIL/donor money and allow some input into the "preferred" pool of candidates. This happened under Julio, and it is now happening under Joe. Therefore, it's on Radakovich himself.

The sad thing is that he doesn't have the "list of coaching candidates in his back pocket" that Sam Jankovich had. He doesn't think very far ahead about "who could be a great coach at UM". Radakovich is competent and capable, but his motivation level has substantially decreased, and he should step aside for someone else to take over. And he is CERTAINLY not a great coach-picker.

But, yes, this hire is NOT TERRIBLE. I just think it deviated from the most important attribute we needed (head coaching experience) and we threw away all of our time to talk to MANY candidates by rushing to focus on one guy very early on.

Sad.
 
Any news on when we can expect some assistants to be named to the staff? We've been hearing about Moran since before Lucas was even hired, but I still haven't seen anything announced.

Nah, man, he is pre-programmed to insult you with arrogance and sarcasm and derision.

It's not even like you questioned HIS particular viewpoint. He is getting snippy and defensive over you questioning somebody completely different from him.

Who knows why he is this way. There's no good reason for it. Unless HE has already been hired by Jai Lucas...

I know a spot on the staff was offered to Moran but no official announcement as of yet. Personally, I think it’s very likely he’ll be accepting the position. He’s got one tournament left with his HS team. I’d expect a decision/announcement soon after that.
