Ponce did almost beat the vaunted Manny defense. Something to think about. If he can do that against Manny, the rest of the conference will be a cakewalk. 🤔

His QB also retired right before the season and his Oline was dog**** this year.

Advanced stats won't get you everywhere. Context is illuminating sometimes. So on that point we agree.

But when there's a large sample size, context becomes less important because you can evaluate the whole data set and control for unlucky breaks (like transfers, injuries, retirements, etc.). It's hard to argue that 4/6 years in the top 40 is somehow less impressive than never once coordinating or co-coordinating a top 40 offense according to F+. One is more impressive than another from an F+ standpoint, so yes, you can be consistent in prefering Candle over Ponce..unless you want to start dipping into other numbers.

There is no stat or other analysis that can justify having an $8mm budget and waiting over 6 weeks to hire Frank Ponce. I’m sorry.

You know sometimes when you’re hiring somebody, you don’t get your first or second choices. That’s kind of the way it goes. I have no idea who it’s going to be but I know I neither plan to slurp nor slam whoever it is.

I am kind of hoping it’s him though because in the end I think it’s not really going matter all that much, and the feminine whining on here will be hilarious.

Another theory I threw out the other day: Maybe Mario doesn't think there's that much of a drop-off between his top-ranked DC candidates and his plan B candidates (the 1st/2nd guy on his DC list versus the 3rd/4th/5th guy). DC is only position I want really worried about. I believe we can get away with above average offense. Elite defenses are hard to come by. When you have one, there isn't a game you not in.

For example, the 2011 Alabama/LSU or the Charles woodson's 97 wolverines. Our home town favorite 2001 hurricanes. That defense was outer worldly, I think we average like 3 turnover a game, less than 10 points a game.
