Manny Diaz also based his entire defensive philosophy on analytics.

The thing is, people are so desperate for that one stat that proves an offense is good/bad and it doesn’t exist. There’s a ton of factors that can skew analytical data. That’s why coaches need to use numbers on a macro level as opposed to focusing on one or two sets of data.

I’m all for using as many metrics as you can rather than the old “gut instinct” but baseball is a completely different animal than football. Mostly due to the fact that baseball is essentially a one vs one game with pitcher and batter.

Maybe we should nominate a CanesInsight poster as an OC figurehead. Prep him for Mario's marathon interview so he lands the role and speeds up this ******* process.

Behind the scenes, LibertyCity will call in plays to his headset.
WeBallin, CanesSkins, and Moss will be Liberty's analytics support team.
OriginalCane will skewer anyone on the message board who ******* about the results.
And Dmoney will do his typical pre-season hype-pod.

Sounds better than Ponce honestly. And at least he's one of ours.

I hear ya. If someone wanted to pull receipts on me, I did post about a month ago that if Mullen needed to be hired that I’d do it for the good of the team but I’d kick and scream all the way. He is a ***ing goober. I have a post a few pages back with my non negotiable demands if he were hired lol. He does know his offense.

BJ and Coley shouldn’t even be in the conversation. Ponce is a limp dik move.

Analytics are part of the puzzle. Some are helpful, some are idiotic.

SP+ (which is incorporated into the F+ ranking) had two-loss Oklahoma 2008 as the greatest team of the modern era. That is stupid.

Here is a less-stupid opinion: a team that scores 34 ppg on an average amount of plays and wins 10 games is a good offense.

I think analytics are extremely valuable and need to be prioritized in our team's approach to the game and our program's approach to team construction.

I also think many in here are conflating "analytics" to be some sort of catch-all to defer to and making it seem as if all analytics should be taken equal.

Any mention comparing the value of F+ for our coaching hires to a baseball team's approach to playing the game or a football coach's in-game decisions based on down/distance/score/etc. seems like a silly conflation to me. Firstly, baseball is the most analytic driven sport by a mile because the data is the least noisy--every player is essentially functioning in a clearly isolated manner in most of their actions on the field.

I think F+ is a really strong analytic stat and we should reference it to assess how our team is doing, how other teams are doing, how good coaches are, etc. But, without a full understanding of the methodology of it and how it may skew results to favor the highest-end programs (more explosive players, more talented players, more games played against competition that doesn't stack up to them), then I think it could be used recklessly as the end-all be-all.

Off the bat, as we look at offensive coaches coming from a G5 level, I can't help but notice how few and far between the presence of G5 teams in the top 25 of F+ ranking is. I would be interested in better understanding why that is. For my understanding of a future OC/DC, I want to be able to reference a multitude of numbers, analytic rankings, raw data rankings, context (schedule, personnel), etc. to be able to form an opinion.

Appreciate the breakdown, however. There's some good stuff in here...just in my opinion, not the splash hire we're looking for given the funds and the timeline we're operating on. We'll see...

I don't disagree with anything you've said.

Just trying to introduce some numbers to the discussion. If I didn't know the name behind those numbers, I'd be pretty intrigued. Knowing the name, I can't help but be disappointed if he's the guy. He's pretty low on the list of acceptable hires. Maybe the last name on it, tbh.

I appreciate your thoughtful breakdown for sure along with most (if not all) your posts, at least you've shown there's something to grasp onto here...just not in this point and time for Miami's sake imo.
