This hasn’t really been talked about a lot as assumption seems to have been made that Mario picked his entire staff. But the more traditional path here is hire the DC/OC and let them pick their guys with HC approval.

This is nothing personal, I have great respect for your posts.

But I have a simply question, because a lot of people seem to post something similar to this...

When has this EVER "been the more traditional path"? For over 100 years, head coaches have been picking their assistant coaches, but somehow in the past year or two, lots of people have been acting as if, somehow, Coordinators have become the new gods, handpicking all their assistant coaches...

I'm not saying it has never happened. There are a handful of coordinators who have built legitimate mini-coaching-trees of their own.

But for the life of me, I have never seen this mythical "if you build the Coordinator, they will come" approach to filling out a college coaching staff.

I just don't get it, and I've certainly rarely seen it over 40+ years of studying college football.

It seems to be a myth that was built in the same lab as "you have to hire an AD before you hire a head football coach"...

No offense taken, don’t mind a good convo! But you’re right in that there’s no statistical evidence to back this up, could be more of a timing thing. Throughout time I just think you typically hear an OC/DC is hired first followed by position coaches.

It very well could be that the HC has decided on the position staff and just wants the coordinator to sign off. But my assumption is that the coordinator then comes in and goes after people they want to help them run their offense/defense. IIRC Lashlee did this with his staff.

And with that, I will say we seem to bucking the trend. I can’t recall a HC being hired at a program before having a new AD announced. So could very well be Mario has his guys and just wants coordinator sign off.

I agree. I don't watch too closely other HC's hiring process, but I don't get the sense that Riley, Lanning, Kelly, and Venables are allowing their coordinators to make hires for him. Because that is essentially what that means. If a HC allows his OC/DC to hire his staff, then the HC is allowing his coordinators to make his hires. Manny Diaz did that with Lashlee but he didn't do it his initial season as HC.

This came from somebody who wouldn’t post on their board. I’m not saying he’s leaving but Uga is somebody to watch. I’ve said that for weeks.
I'll be nervous about Trob and uga for a while. I mentioned a little while back that it wouldn't surprise me if Kirby scapegoated the first year DB coach. Now we hear rumors of them supposedly getting into it. Let that secondary look subpar either tonight or in a bama rematch (if they win tonight), and I have no doubt they will turn the heat up on Trob. Hopefully he sticks because him with Mario would be lethal.

I wouldnt want him as a DC if that's what you took my comment as. A solid position coach hire, yes. Mario seems to think highly of him. Mario did promote him to co-DC once he replaced Taggart. Mario does seem like that boss you would follow and work for again. It really depends on what Heyward values right now when considering making a move. We can certainly offer more money and a heck of a better platform to work on.

Who knows. Like I said, I didnt know much about him...until that picture surfaced. It didnt look like him and Mario were swapping crockpot recipes.
I get it, but the reason he left Mario in the first place was because he didn't get the DC job at Oregon when there was two opportunities. So unless he is not happy at Cal it would not make much sense to come be a position coach for Mario again.

To be fair, calling Mario hiring elite OC/DC at Miami with a huge wallet to offer contracts with isn't going out on a limb. My wife could make that prediction.
both have said the same kind of nuggets that's all I'm saying!! im just waiting around scrolling waiting for some info or rumors just like everybody else!! Just Win!!

One has given a whole bunch of names that it would be nearly impossible to be wrong and the other hasn't provided any names so that he can't be wrong. But hey. Whatever.

Is the Oc going to be Kendal Briles?

My man
No matter how many times you ask that question, no one here can tell you Yes/No and be 100% certain right now, lol. For the most part, everyone is waiting for the official announcement just like you. It looks like Briles is strong possibility, but again..until we see that scroll, nothing is official.
