Gaby reads the boards and only has one cb coach as a source. That might be a dry hole soon

Monica Lewinsky...was a...dry hole...

(and so people don't think that was a political comment, it is a reference to the Howard Stern Show cutting up the Bill Clinton audio book [and many other audio books] to make random and ridiculous sentences such as "Monica Lewinsky...was a...dry hole...", and then playing those quotes over and over and over again)

Is the running from the spread to make up for a poor OLine? Ill go ahead and put it under gimicky in my book. Not saying I'm right. Just not my style of football..
I would not call it gimmicky- I would call it smart football. Spread the defense out and give your "poor" O-line a fighting chance.
If you got a good OL and the defense has to load the box up then you have a numbers advantage in throwing the ball.

You know what i like better than a balanced playbook???? TOUCHDOWNS. Bring me a guy that knows how to score with a top QB, talented receivers and a really solid stable of RB’s and TE’s!!!!!! It should actually be fun to scheme with this O.

I think the term "gimmicky" in this case can be referring to masking one's deficiencies to do one thing by doing another.

It's like a defense relying on heavy blitzes to mask a lack of penetration by the front 4.

So maybe it's smart but only smart as a way of compensating for your weakness in short term but not a foundation you want to build for long term success.

Whatever Mario and his coaching staff do going forward, I'm not sure why people are arguing about what happened in 2019. It was real.

Strangely though, despite insane tools at 6-6 and 236 pounds with a live arm and effortless athleticism, in 2019 Oregon restricted Herbert, making him a secondary piece of the offense and focusing on running the football and playing sound defense. Think about that for a second. Oregon had a legitimate contender to be the No. 1 overall pick at quarterback, and had no qualms about placing him in the background of the offense. But, from a team perspective, the philosophy worked. The Ducks went 12-2 and won the Rose Bowl.

But it completely confounded the draft community. Why would Oregon schematically limit Herbert's importance? Why was Herbert playing so conservatively? Where were the deep strikes? The awesome throws while on the move? The long scrambles? Why are they running on third and long?

It's over, though. Let's see what Mario chooses to allow his OC to do with Tyler Van Dyke.
That aint the point. Will Mario lean into something that isn't the strength of the team just for the sake of balance? If the team's best attribute is TVD throwing the ball why would you limit those chances and let the opposing defense off the hook? This isn't the late 90s-mid 2010s NFL.

Alabama threw the ball 44 times coupled with three Bryce Young runs and ran it 22 times with running backs against Georgia. Does anyone believe Cristobal would be willing to take that approach or would he want a more even split simply because he believes in running the football? We're gonna spend money like we want to win titles. The HC has to be someone who understands how to do that. Hopefully he learned more from Saban than just his recruiting plan. Saban will adapt his philosophies and do what it takes.

What hasn't been mentioned in these posts about Mario "handcuffing" Justin Herbert is who the balls were being thrown to.

Burrow at LSU threw to Ja'Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson - both first rounders

Tua had Devonta Smith, Jerry Jeudy, Jaylen Waddle, Henry Ruggs, and John Metchie III for God's sake.

Herbert's receivers will be lucky to even be drafted (Daewood Davis, Johnny Johnson III, Jaylon Redd).

I'm guessing if Herbert had the horses that Burrow and Tua had at receiver, yeah - Mario might have opened up the playbook a bit more...

Oh my lord, you are making WAY too much sense for the Mario-haters. How dare you provide a logical rebuttal to their "Herbert threw for TWO YARDS LESS PER PASS than a couple of other guys I could name" genius...

What does that make Hill-dawg?

Like i said to each his own. I prefer a balanced offense. I'm not worried about what the QB is going to do in the pros. I just care what hapoens in orange and green. The way things have been going? Ill take 12-2 with TVD going in the 2nd round all day....
Yeah it's all just hypotheticals but more of my point was if they let Herbert feast the way Burrow did then does Oregon go from a 12-2 team to a 15-0 team?

So it's not really about draft position. It's about winning the most games and just stating that you can make a case that by not maximizing Herbert's talents, Oregon missed out on a potential playoff run.
