Some names to watch before it’s deleted

If we’re being unrealistic that’s a good name. But he’s not leaving his alma mater while coaching his son.

I judge defenses with my eyes not rankings. Other than Miss St and maybe Uga the defense played well. Even Uga got away fast. I still can’t wrap my head around what happened in the fourth quarter against MSU. That was just crazy.

Go watch that Bama game and tell me that’s not top shelf stuff. When’s the last time Alabama was shut out in three quarters? Ten points in regulation. If Auburns rb stays in bounds it’s likely only 3 points.
I didn’t say he was bad. I said he was a good coach and has had solid defenses. I don’t know if the defenses would be good enough to justify the money that would be spent to get him

What part of "Dont go by total stats" was difficult?
The Msu game is the one that makes no sense. The last 15-20 minutes of that game was just insane. It doesn’t fit what they were all year. They dominated that game up until that little window. Auburn’s pass defense wasn’t all that good this year but it never looked like that.

Derek Mason is currently paid 1.5 Million at Auburn and you'd think they'd match/extend him up to at least 2 Million. What is his connection to Miami and Mario?

He just won two recruiting battles for DT's that Miami was also after. Just curious what makes us the better option for him.

He is a good coach don’t get me wrong. And I dont think he would ever put a terrible defense out there if he was here but I don’t know if it would be good enough to justify 2m+.
The truth is there aren't really any realistic elite coaches, especially on defense. Muschamp hasn't had a good defense in about 10 years so one can say his best days are behind him.

Jim Leonhard isn't coming here. Phil Parker isn't coming here. You can make the case for Heacock but I'm sure even some people here would say he's a Big 10 guy and his defenses don't work + the guy has never had a defensive player at Iowa State drafted in the NFL.

Mike Tressel and Doug Belk have limited DC experience. Schumann is big part of an elite DC but he's never been the guy so high risk high reward.

Go to the NFL and hope for a Macdonald/Michigan type of situation? Mike had zero experience as a DC so that was quite the gamble.

Point is there are some options but almost all of them have legit question marks. Few, if any, should be considered "elite." This makes Mason arguably one of the more "elite" options out there all things considered.

I would be fine with mason my thing was with all the money that would have to be involved with him would it be worth it. But I know at the least with him the defense would be solid

Solid by what metric?

Not saying he wouldn’t be very solid here, but what metric are we using to judge our potential new hires across the board?

Can we use similar metrics for offense and defense or no?

Cool.

What happens now?

Total defense isn't a worthless stat so I don't know why people want to pretend it is. Playing bend-but-don't-break that drops you in total defense rankings all for the sake of keeping ppg low still means you're sacrificing field position and time of possession to do it, and people do it because they don't trust their defense to play tight and straight up.

I'd be happy with Mason but a question:

didn't Auburn lose leads and the game late a few times this year?

One way I look at a defense is how good are they when they have to keep the other team from scoring when the game is on the line

it was stated earlier ITT that Auburn and their HC are not enamored with each other. Neither thinks it's a great fit.
