If you really think about it for a second, Jason Candle probably made the least amount of sense of most of the rumored names that have been mentioned...
Dude was born & raised in Ohio, played & coached in Ohio for his entire career & is the HC of a G5 team less than 2 hours away from his hometown, not to mention, the man is nearly 20 games above .500 with a 60% winning percentage as a Head Coach...
Why TF would he leave all that to come to Miami to be a coordinator? That’s literally a demotion lol.
I'll play along with you brother. I agree with you that he didnt make as much sense as some of the other names on paper. But your last sentence got me. I dont agree with that. There is reason for him to come. It just depends on what his goals are and what he values right now. Major variables in this decision:
Location: If he and his family didnt want to leave the Midwest, no problem.... then Mario needs to do a better job as an interviewer. A good interviewer can spot roadblocks early on. Certain pieces of the puzzle just dont fit when you look at a job opening and a candidate. The location of Miami wasnt going to change from the 1st call to the offer. If Candle is a Midwest guy who doesnt want to uproot his family, I completely understand, but why did it get to offer stage if that was the sticking point I would love to know, unless Mario just wanted to make his 1st choice say no.
Loyalty/Lifer: If he just couldnt pull the trigger and loves being at Toledo, no problem. He shouldnt come. Mario was in the same predicament. I can respect that.
Money: If maximizing your income potential was the highest on his list of things that are important to him right now, we had ALL the reason for him to leave.
Future Employment: If the most important thing to him is the quickest path to an NFL OC job or P5 HC job, there are 2 paths. He chose to stay at Toledo. There is still a path from there although that window is more narrow. The new AD will be evaluating him this coming season. If he doesnt show progress, very real chance the new AD releases him and hires "his guy". He has been HC for 6 seasons and we know he has been passed up for P5 jobs. The market is speaking. It still can happen. But with the way coordinators are being paid now, I think its a very real option for G5 HC to navigate to a P5 HC job by going to a great P5 situation as a coordinator. If he came here and did well (which he is set up to do with our roster), Id go as far as to say the quality of P5 coaching job he gets would be better than the one he may get coming from Toledo. He would have HC experience on his resume and a recent stint architecting an explosive offense at a P5 school. That sounds **** if Im an AD in the market and have boosters up my a$$ looking for a splash hire with a great offense.
You cant deny there would be reasons to come to Miami to be a coordinator in his seat. When anyone changes jobs there are multiple variables that have to be considered and a value placed on each. Those variables werent stack ranked the right way in this moment for Candle to justify Miami. But there is a justification for him and future G5 coaches that there may not have been until recently.
Ive got no problem with him staying. Ive been cool as a cucumber through this and could care less when Mario makes the hires. I just want them to be the right ones. On to the next.
