Optics obviously only have the value of optics but here is my personal issue if the hires end up being the likes of Campanile and Whipple.

- You can't sell these as your first or even near first choices due to the amount of time it took to make the hires and the fact that these type of guys absolutely wouldn't necessitate nor be able to command such a delay.

- You're then essentially ceding that you couldn't get your top choices even with this narrative of "unlimited funds" to do so

Again, optics are always negated or enhanced by actual results but if at least one of these hires isn't overtly impressive at first glance then it's a bad look.

The proper comparison is comparing Mario in the off-season to other newly hired coaches in the off-season, not to Manny Diaz, who was a lame duck coach with 3 consecutive years of **** stinking up his appeal and resume.

Lots of the other high profile new coaches (Riley, Kelly, Venables) are at schools where win now mode is the only acceptable framework. Mario is in a rebuild. I'm over winning the off-season and unfounded hype. I want the right hires made and building this program the right way. Early indicators are he's doing just that.

Smart sees the best WR class in South Florida history and you think he is going to just sit by and let Mario clean up??

Big time programs will do anything to win and make it hard for you too. Not saying it will work.
