During the spring, McCord, AQM, and Trent Harris were in a three way battle for the "DE" position Shayon Green played in 2013.

McCord is currently listed as a linebacker while AQM, Harris, Thomas, Smith, Jackson are listed as DEs.

Chickillo, Pierre, Hamilton, Moore, King are all listed as DL.

The DL in this defense are asked to be big and take up space against the run, rush the passer as best they can on passes. We certainly don't need Chad Thomas taking up space and controlling gaps. We want him attacking. He didn't come here to be a 280lb 3-4 DE. He's a 3-4 OLB all the way.

Now that Thomas and Jackson and Harris and Smith are here, perhaps McCord is lo longer needed at DE as he was in the spring and has moved back to linebacker go make room for Chad Thomas at DE.

I know it was rumored that Smith would start off as a linebacker but he's listed as a DE.

So we should be looking at something like this:

DL:

Chickillo sr
Pierre sr
Wyche jr
Kamalu jr
Heurtelou jr
Moore jr
Hamilton jr
King jr
Moten fr
Jenkins fr

"DE":

AQM so
Thomas fr
Harris fr
Jackson fr
Smith fr

LB:

Perryman sr
Armbrister sr
McCord jr
Kirby jr
Blue so
Figueroa so
Grace so
Owens fr
Young fr
McCray fr

Other than the loss of Perryman and Chickillo, next years new DC should have a decent amount of talented young guys to coach up. And whoever it is better bring in 5 or 6 monster defensive lineman quick or opposing qb's are going to continue to play catch for several more years. please o please show us you can adapt this year dorito.

Tyriq should still have a big role as a pass rusher. AQM and Thomas can play the role of Shayon and be on the field together on passing downs to get after the QB.

McCord
AQM
Thomas
Kamalu
Harris
Jackson
Smith

all these guys can be used to rush the passer

This reminds me of a article on grantland I read a little while back about the Seattle Seahawks defense and running a 43 under. Seattle has such a funky group of front 7 players like playing 300+ lbs red Bryant at one DE spot and pass rusher Chris Clemons at the other spot (similar to chick and McCord). It goes on to talk about the differences between a one gap and 2 gap defense and how 1 gapping is a more aggressive defense, but you need to to bring a safety down to account for the last gap. Pete Carroll fixed that by having a couple players 2 gap and the rest one gap.

It also says this defense was far to much for a college team to handle and he could never implement it at USC. I'll post the link if you guys wanna read it.

the biggest problem is opposing teams OC's recognize how putrid our LB's are in pass coverage and use a lot to 3 step drops to not allow our strength (DE's) to have time to get to their QB. one of the main reasons we give up so many first downs which goes hand in hand with Mark's mindset "its about points not yards"

Its year 4 and we or the staff still don't know McCords position! Lol

The next DC is gonna have a bevy of talent to work with.

Good ol 4 man rush.. Cover 2 man. Easy peasy

Might be able to put out a decent DL this year and next. Might be. We have a wealth of ends, with different skills. And hopefully some of those kids in the interior step up.

But ****, we need another 2-3 DTs this year. Cause after 2015...

UL puts up 500+ yards.

****...really.....thanks Debby Downer.....

Aww....crap.....a girl broke up with me once....now I'm going to turn *** because I had some bad experiences with females
Aww...****.....the stock market crashed several times...I'm never going to invest again

Yeah we get it....I hate the yardage NoD has given up...trust me....look up some of my old posts......BUT GET OVER IT....ALL OF YOU CRY BABY ********. I do know I support the 'Canes. Unlike some of you idiots I remember the Butch years when people were calling for his head....most idiots didn't understand that Erickson left the cupboard bare...but yes at times Butch could have done better. At the same time Erickson should have never lost to BYU.....I remember JJ's embarrassing 1984 season. I remember his bowl game following the 1985 season.....95% of you idiots that ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** don't even know what bowl game we played in/what team beat our *** in that bowl game. The point is...crap happens....and you morons are fair weather fans who know nothing about Miami except for what you saw on the 30 for 30. You guys are the same idiots who had never heard the stories about the Miami players calling the Oklahoma players' rooms' ......or the even knew about the **** talking at the coin toss....or any if these stories until 30 for 30 came on. But you same bleeding gash ******* think you are some kind of Miami fan know it all....but you already see the most obvious crap....BUT WONT LET IT GO

Some of you idiots need to realize we have what we have and deal with it....or stop posting you miserable pricks. Start lobbying the school to fire the staff and front your own money for a new staff...that way you are at least trying to do something instead of ***** about it.

I'm excited about the talent we have...and we should have a good season...and yes....if the D sucks....D'Onofrio should go...if he doesn't Al should.

Now take your tampons out and quit *****ing

"Good" season? Golden followers will claim 8-4 and third in the Coastal is a "Great Season", just like they crow about 9-4, with that respectable third in the Coastal and STRONG end of season run in 2013.

Trending up. Give him the Seattle defense, and we still finish third in the Coastal.

Smokey,

Wow....strong comeback....wait to prove you reason to complain.

Who said the points you just made were true...I don't consider that a "good" season....

This is the biggest problem with this staff. I've been around people in the program long enough to know that the staff is not comprised of a bunch of incompetents. Green? Yes. Incompetent? Not at all. In fact, I think the group as a whole has the potential to be an elite staff in a few years once Mr. Swag cuts his teeth (I think he's going to be a good one) and the defense is fixed. Al has learned and adapted to the culture a ton since he arrived. But he and his boy still think they are the smartest guys in the room. They just can't concede that this scheme takes both elite lineman and advanced capacity for the scheme. They have failed to sign the elite interior guys needed for the scheme. And they refuse to acknowledge that the scheme is too complex for many of our players, most of whom come from poorly coached high school programs. I am going to hope, blindly, that we see the defense adapt this year to its personnel. I'll argue this until I turn blue: we have more raw talent on this team than we've had in almost a decade, even with the dearth of interior lineman (we really haven't had any interior lineman worth a **** since Coker was clapping on the sidelines). I'm not a coach, but from my fan's perspective, Dorito needs to simplify the scheme and adjust it to fit our roster.

The reason opposing OC's are running three step drops is because our DB's are playing 7-10 yds off the line of scrimmage. If we press, opposing team is not so inclined to throw the quick out or in pass. And this gives our DL and LB's time to make more plays.

In my opinion, it's the secondary defensive philosophy that is killing UM's D!!

the biggest problem is opposing teams OC's recognize how putrid our LB's are in pass coverage and use a lot to 3 step drops to not allow our strength (DE's) to have time to get to their QB. one of the main reasons we give up so many first downs which goes hand in hand with Mark's mindset "its about points not yards"

It is clear that Golden staunchly believes in his d, which is good. He also has proven that he can field a good defense once all of the pieces are in place. I take some comfort in knowing that it took Carroll a couple of years in Seattle, with professional athletes, to build that defensive monster. He may still be on track, considering he is working with kids. My fear is that he is working with kids that may never grasp the full scheme. I hope these guys are refining the scheme to match the talent and intellectual capacity of the kids. It seems like he is doing a good job of helping the young talent maximize their skill, almost to a fault by relying on the older, less talented kids to fill the advanced roles.

He is probably a year or two away if we are honest with ourselves. I think we will begin to turn the corner with this year's version if the defense.
