pretty much thisFrom what I’ve seen when we line up in traditional sets and just play base defense we have the athletes to get it done

Kiko it’s only good at up the middle blitzes and shooting the gaps and outside of that he’s a liability at everything else. Might as well put them at defensive endGreat read
Kiko is a phone booth LB. Needs to play more traditional MLB and less edge. Yes, he will have to cover sometimes, but minimize that. Popo and Wesley are more than capable of getting in the flats and seams on rb/te
Someone mentioned more zone and 2 deep safties to minimize damage. This could work as well.
Yesterday, missed tackles cost us 10s of yards, maybe 100+ total, the outs were open every play and when we pushed our secondary towards the boundaries, the middle was incomprehensibly open. Insanely open
I like more basic 4-2-5
2 high. Kiko between tackles going downhill filling gaps but sometimes getting depth to get a body in the middle.
Zone underneath w nickle support in deep middle
Honestly I don't know
Coaching and scheme has been poor
Responsibility football has been atrocious
And missed assignments and tackles are just exacerbating it.
We can’t play zone either not sure why people keep saying this
Zone takes eyes and discipline and we got none of it
thinking back to last year he made a lot of plays blitzing from an off the ball set. He had a couple, if I remember correctly where he was set inside 4 yds off the ball, delayed a second and twisted to the outside around for a sack. I just think he is most effective coming from off the ball, reading, and filling.Kiko it’s only good at up the middle blitzes and shooting the gaps and outside of that he’s a liability at everything else. Might as well put them at defensive end
Yeah, but does Mario let him bring in HIS coaches? We can upgrade on Guidry. Hope it happens this offseason.
Just sit in a **** zone with two deep safeties as others have said. The DL will be fine and potentially even be more impactful in pass rushing.
Fully agree with your initial post. I've been similarly frustrated by Guidry's instance on near-every-play blitzing and stunting with the front seven because he likes to play pressure defense and get into the backfield, while leaving our weakest unit (DB's) exposed. Among other issues is we get less drop from our LBs than any other defense I watch because one or both of our LBs are generally up at the line of scrimmage trying to get into the backfield. And this puts pressure on the DB unit.
Even this play Roman broke down makes your point. Both Baron and Kiki went into the B gap. That's Guidry's high pressure style of defense where he overloads a gap in hopes of getting a free runner into the backfield. And Louisville burned us with a quick play to the outside.
I have the highest respect for Roman, but I disagree somewhat with him on this play. Jaden Harris certainly didn't play this well, but he was put into conflict. Roman noted that Baron and Kiki both filled the B gap and that left the C gap open. It made the C gap Harris' first responsibility. We can see from the video that Harris made his first move looking to control the C gap but UL's very fast RB bounced it outside our CB making for a high degree of difficulty assignment for Harris. Essentially Harris had C gap responsibility and also outside which is where the play went. That was his conflict. Our DB's aren't capable of making high degree of difficulty plays like this, but that's the position they're regularly put in.
The weakest unit on of defense is our DB's. Yet Guidry's defense puts the most pressure on our weakest unit.
i'm a guidry guy ... but his allegience to harris is making him a corch ... film don't lieCam is masking our sorry defensive CORCH’in too
We need better players.
Yes. He cannot go sideline to sideline. His middle blitz is effective. You can wisely use him in 2nd and longs as a blitzer or drop him out w 8 yard depth. Just a body in the way.Kiko it’s only good at up the middle blitzes and shooting the gaps and outside of that he’s a liability at everything else. Might as well put them at defensive end
Tallest guys at the midget convention last year.TrumpyCane thinks Kinchens and Williams were t do bad after all
Well most of it before I got disgusted. I focused on our defense, namely the front 6, including alignment, movement, etc. At times it’s clear Guidry thinks he’s smarter than he is. It’s also equally clear the D would be much better if they just lined up in traditional sets and let the players read and react.
First drive we lined up vanilla, both backers off the ball. Two incomplete passes and a 2 yard run.
Second drive Guidry starts getting cute. Takes Wes out by having him bull rush the left tackle and has Kiko as a spy and eventual blitzer. Quick pass across the middle for 17. Second play a twist opens up a hole and Brown goes for 8. 3rd play we do the same thing. Baron twists out of the play and Harris takes another bad angle. 43 yd TD.
Third drive. Again rather than letting our guys out athlete them Guidry brings the house and a quick crossing route is dropped. Would have gone for 8-12. 2nd play brought a LB again and the check down went for 8. 3rd out of the wildcat. Both backers off the ball and Kiko filled for a 1 yard gain. Couple more plays and their drive fizzled out.
Fourth drive. Quick 8 yd out to the TE. Good tackle by Popo. Run outside. Alderman takes a bad angle. Luckily Baron held the edge and tackled for a TFL. The 3rd play, 3rd and 3. This is a wtf Guidry moment. We line up Barrow, Mesidor, and Baron to the boundary (ball is on the hash) with the most central player being over the tackle and on the field side Bain is outside shoulder on the Tackle. Both LBs Wes/Kiko are inside a yard off the ball. On the snap they drop. Handoff to Chaney goes for 26 yards right up the middle. I turned it off after that.
First of all I’m not a D1 defensive coordinator. But it’s pretty clear our LBs are put in bad spots over and over. Kiko should always be off the ball 3-5 yards. He’s a downhill LB and needs to see the play develop. Popo needs to get more snaps. From what I’ve seen he has better instincts than Wes.
On the DL we spend more time twisting and stunting our way out of pressure and position than we do getting home. Same with bringing our LBs. They're not getting pressure so why do we keep bringing it.

It’s still last year talent wise cuz lol the d-line got upgraded and the secondary got decimated. That’s actually worse. Can’t play zone because they don’t know rules and not athletic enough to play manTo me it feels like Guidry still thinks it’s last year
He had to get creative to work around horrific personnel up front last year

I have to think Jason Taylor makes the D line calls. That would be like Dawson makes the O line calls.Well most of it before I got disgusted.
