Well most of it before I got disgusted. I focused on our defense, namely the front 6, including alignment, movement, etc. At times it’s clear Guidry thinks he’s smarter than he is. It’s also equally clear the D would be much better if they just lined up in traditional sets and let the players read and react.

First drive we lined up vanilla, both backers off the ball. Two incomplete passes and a 2 yard run.

Second drive Guidry starts getting cute. Takes Wes out by having him bull rush the left tackle and has Kiko as a spy and eventual blitzer. Quick pass across the middle for 17. Second play a twist opens up a hole and Brown goes for 8. 3rd play we do the same thing. Baron twists out of the play and Harris takes another bad angle. 43 yd TD.

Third drive. Again rather than letting our guys out athlete them Guidry brings the house and a quick crossing route is dropped. Would have gone for 8-12. 2nd play brought a LB again and the check down went for 8. 3rd out of the wildcat. Both backers off the ball and Kiko filled for a 1 yard gain. Couple more plays and their drive fizzled out.

Fourth drive. Quick 8 yd out to the TE. Good tackle by Popo. Run outside. Alderman takes a bad angle. Luckily Baron held the edge and tackled for a TFL. The 3rd play, 3rd and 3. This is a wtf Guidry moment. We line up Barrow, Mesidor, and Baron to the boundary (ball is on the hash) with the most central player being over the tackle and on the field side Bain is outside shoulder on the Tackle. Both LBs Wes/Kiko are inside a yard off the ball. On the snap they drop. Handoff to Chaney goes for 26 yards right up the middle. I turned it off after that.

First of all I’m not a D1 defensive coordinator. But it’s pretty clear our LBs are put in bad spots over and over. Kiko should always be off the ball 3-5 yards. He’s a downhill LB and needs to see the play develop. Popo needs to get more snaps. From what I’ve seen he has better instincts than Wes.

On the DL we spend more time twisting and stunting our way out of pressure and position than we do getting home. Same with bringing our LBs. They're not getting pressure so why do we keep bringing it.

From what I’ve seen when we line up in traditional sets and just play base defense we have the athletes to get it done.

I think Harris is by far the biggest issue on the team. Not necessarily disagreeing with your analysis. You need a safety that can make-up for mistakes, but with Harris it feels like we are playing ten guys on defense. I like how Roman breaks down film and in the clip below shows what Harris is not doing. Patterson needs to get more reps.

Agree. I was focusing more on the front 6. Terrible angle and slow read on that run. Bad read by Wes as well. Saw Patterson got 20 snaps, most of them in the second half I’m assuming.

glad I’m not the only one who utterly baffled at this one.

I think we are going to start seeing more and more Patterson. We just need adequate safety play. PFF gave Patterson the 7th highest grade on the team for yesterday's game. He was the highest graded DB.

I don’t put much stock in PFF but from what I’ve seen out of 20 and 32 they both need to be on the field more.

Maybe someone in the media can ask Guidry about playing more zone, cover 2 man, less stunting and let his players just play straight up.

@DMoney you got any inside ppl who can ask this at the next media opportunity?

Please don’t. Last I remember him saying much was after USF when he was ****y about making adjustments… 3 more games later and he’s getting gashed way too often…

DL has to start getting home
They make their presence known here and there but they are not a consistent unit rushing the passer right now and that’s one of the more disappointing things for me.

We are winning from inside on passing downs and that’s fantastic but with Bain and Barron it’s also surprising

At this point just drop the backers and DBs into zone and get pressure with the 4 DLinemen. With the occasional backer or DB blitz. We have the D Line to straight up beat any OLine we’ll go against the rest of the regular season without doing anything fancy
I feel like this is what everyone with eyes is clamoring for, but I’m no DC. I will say, probably confirmation bias as I haven’t watched it back, but it seemed like our most positive plays yesterday were when we played just a base 4-2-5, no walking the linebackers up into the LOS, no inverting the ******* defensive line to have Barrow lined up on the edge, and no slow looping twists. Just let the front 4 try to create some havoc on their own and protect the secondary a little bit.

Think his style is a product of coaching at lower level schools as well, in which a lot of times you have to get fancy and creative because you don’t have the quality of athletes we have at UM.

I agree with the point of just playing more straight up but the trade off is going to be we’re going to give up a lot more 5,6,8 yard plays and have to tighten up down in the red zone and hold teams to FGs. It will look more like bend but don’t break IMHO. Guess at this point that’s better than giving up 45 😂

They have played a total of 2 games together as a unit.

Bain is still getting in game shape. He looks hefty out there.

Barrows is settling in and dominating.

Mesidor is out of position but being a team player, he was getting in game shape earlier this year after missing so much time with injury.

Baron got banged up against USF and still had a hammy issues against Cal.

Alston got injured against Va Tech

I think they continue to get better from
Here on out. FSU should be their best showing of the year.

It’s time for Clark, Moten and another DE to step up.

If this unit is fresh and healthy as I expect them to be Saturday night, we should see them dominate.

I’ll take bend dont break at this point.

It will be FG for the other team verse TD for Miami.

Most teams won’t be able to keep up.
