From @caenswatch (aka Jorge Milian) Andreu Swasey says that Duke Johnson ran 40 yards in 4.39 seconds during freshman testing. Tracy Howard clocked in at 4.65.

You want speed in a corner, of course, but the main thing is that closing speed. Tracy might run a 4.65 when timed in the 40, but what does he run when he has to close on the ball when it's in the air? I'd wager he'd be a bit faster.

If speed was all it took to be a great CB, then McGee would be an all-american by now. Tracy has the technique, is physical, and has the proper instincts to dominate in coverage. That's all I care about.

duke's time isn't bad at all, especially considering we've always had a reliable clock when it came to combine comparisons.

SPEED BABY!!!!

Good 40 times are all about getting a good start. Most freshman who did not run Track don't know how to get out the blocks.

Nice. Takes out some of the sting of losing Miller. Completely agree with someone in here that compared him to Reggie Bush and how he was used in U$C.

yup. for anyone thinking the offense will take a hit from losing Miller's speed, let's remember he ran a 4.40 at the combine. Duke is ready to take over the spot Lamar left open.

I'll reserve judgment until I see him on the field - but a 4.65 from Howard has me a little worried.

40 times this time of year are hard to look at....these young guys are eating different, being away from home, moms cooking, etc.....4.5 that can tackle is better than 4.3 that cant...

If Tracy is as physical as the reports are saying he is, chances are he will not have to do alot of closing on receivers that run by him if he has the technique to keep them jammed at the line.

Yeah you guys are right I would rather have DVD than Tracy Howard

/ thats what you are saying by hinting to being worried by the 40 times

Howard's time is fine, especially for a true freshman.

Straight-line speed isn't the most important attribute for a CB. Quickness, acceleration, fluidity of the hips, technique, and awareness are all more important.
