Should the #26 jersey be retired?

I guess since he's passed away it might be ok. Just usually, we have so many guys whose number could be retired we wouldn't have any numbers left.

The #26 is highly regarded in Cane lore, that being said, to have the honor and privilege of donning the #26 should come along with a list of requirements:

-The players on the team feel that a specific DB be honored by that #
- He should be among unquestioned leaders of the team
- He should embody the same passion and ferocity that Sean played the game.
- He should bleed orange and green - more so than anyone on the team
- Have proven that he has a tireless work ethic
- Have the UTMOST respect for the # and everything that Sean was.

**Then and only then, will they have the right to wear 26.**

I think it should be something that is passed on, like an honor thing. Only the leader of the defensive backs can wear that number. Upperclassmen, etc. Has to be earned.

Looks like rayshawn switched to 26 ..according to the depth chart at least.. Don't think it should be retired though.

No number should ever be retired for any reason. The greatest way to honor a legend is to allow someone to attempt to duplicate the success.

I actually like what they did at Michigan with Desmond Howards 81. Any player who wears 81 has a patch on his jersey which honors Des. Cool idea that honors the past player without having to retire the jersey.

Except Des wore 21. Michigan has certain "legend" numbers, i.e., Desmond Howard 21, Gerald Ford 48, Bennie Oosterbaan 47. Novel idea.

You're right, my bad.

I don't think it makes sense in the college game. When a number gets retired in the pros that player usually wore it for a decade plus, to the point that their name, the number and the colors are indistinguishable and anyone else wearing it would just be weird.

I dont think it should be, but I dont know what is taking so long to put our 2000-02 guys on the Ring of Honor

He's most gifted player to ever play at the University that has the most talented alumni in college football history.
He was physically one of the best, but when I use to to attend the games late 90's Ed Reed was on another level. It seemed like Reed knew the other teams whole playbook and was a 1st team All-American his jr and sr years and carried it over into a HOF NFL career.

Couldn't agree more . ST was physically more gifted but Ed was always a better player.

A la JFK, legend of ST grows in death more than in life. There are players deservijg of a retired number. ST is not one of them. Great player, but there were better here in terms of retiring numbers. Hendricks certainly had greater indiviual accomplishments. Reed was better at his position. Kosar certainly derserves for his 83 season alone as opposed to Testeverde. You cold go on forever debating this.

Generally guys whos numbers are retired are the guys who blazed the trail.

My fam hates me for saying this, but i agree....ed was the better player by far. I loved ST, but i still get ****ed when i think about ST making that pick and retuning it and clarett stripped him....that still stings, but yet ST was our best player in that game(winslow too) so i cant be too ****ed at him lol. Ed didnt make many mistakes(i dont count that penn state game in 99 lol. Ed was the qb for the defense when he played....ST is a legend...what couldve been, like bo jackson.....i think he would have supplanted ed as the best safety in the league about now, but......RIP

No I can name 10 numbers that could be be retired before his. no disrespect to him I love him. He's the most physically gifted player to ever play at Miami but he's not the best player to ever play Miami or in the top 10.

I couldn't disagree more. His legend isn't growing. He WAS legend even while playing @ UM. I mean, who else had their own emoticon? His hits were vicious.... special teams even! He was the original meast.::alien::

and if it were up to me - they should let Fentress wear it .....
