*Secondary* things don't matter nearly as much as.....

Well we had a pretty **** good front 7 this year and buttcheeks in the secondary, and made a bunch of awful QBs look like Tom Brady.

Do any of you want to win a title? Then it's all important.

We have our top 4 secondary guys coming back next year. (Jackson, Young, Bandy, Dean) So unless you think none of them are going to make any improvements next year and get better..then I guess you are right and not getting TC will be our doom.

dean hasn't sniffed the field all season and when he did he got merked, young started to get exposed as the year went on, jackson was solid against bigger wideouts but when he was matched up with the quicker more elusive guys he couldn't handle them the same, the only pure corner returning is bandy, we need talent in the secondary as you saw in the bowl game if we actually had more playmakers back there we probably win

as for the thread yes the trenches are important but you also need talent in the secondary like as i said in the bowl game we got pressure had guys in spots but they made no play on the ball, its a must to have a balance on the defense overall can't focus on just one area and hope that the other sorts out thats just not going to work

Allow me to retort..

Dean - Good cover skills. We are assuming he will get better right? His only problem was lack of tackling ability or he would have gotten alot of burn. He can work on that.

MJ - Herbie said on national TV he was one of the best CBs in the country. He went from a attrition candidate to a national name. He will get better.

Young - Lets not kid ourselves. He was a 3* recruit. Rumph is maxing this kids ability out. He is inconsistant but when he left the Clemson game with an injury the secondary felt it. He will get better.

Bandy - He has been a board favorite since his Jr year of HS. He will get better and improve this year.

This is a potential top 2-3 secondary in the conference easily. Lets not kid ourselves. This is a strength of the team.

Are we trying to beat Alabama and Clemson or are we trying to beat Pittsburgh and Wisconsin?

If you want to beat Alabama and Clemson you better land studs at every position on the field, every year. That doesn't mean we have to land more 5 stars than Alabama, not happening... but you need more guys like Ivey and Frierson who can play with anyone. Alabama will have 5 star OL blocking that front seven you're talking about, and their 5 star QB is going to be throwing to 4 5 star WRs. That's the challenge. That's the bar. It ain't gonna be easy. You might say it's specifically "gonna take 3 motha ******* things", but I digress. "We'll be fine" needs to be purged from every facet of Miami football from coaches down to fans.

The problem with our defense is simple.

We aren't physically dominant in the DL. What I mean by this is that we can't get consistent pressure just straight up. We are forced to slant, twist, stunt, etc and bring extra men. Teams figured this out early and that brings us to problem two.

Our secondary isn't physical. When an offense goes for a quick / short passing play, our corners aren't in a position to make the play. There's two reasons for this. One, by and large we don't have physical corners and with receivers bigger than they have ever been, this problem is magnified. Two, that limits us to playing zone and with the added blitzers not where they would traditionally play, we're at a loss.

So the problem, as I see it is Two-fold. Get some more meat on the DL and we seem to have addressed the physical corner this year, but the problem I have there is that I don't see any one of them being a shut down corner.

Edit - The losses of McIntosh and Norton will be felt this year for sure. We better hope the linebackers take a big step forward and some of the new blood can play right away. That doesn't happen, our defense is going to be horrid. The blueprint is there to shred this defense and coaches know it.

Nice elaboration SayWhat.

THIS.

I guess nobody watched the bowl game. Or any other game. Our DBs are horribly coached.

If you hire a HIGHSCHOOL coach, its bc he is bringing his players. That is why Richt hired Rumph, bc Rumph secured Sony Michel for him at UGA. The expectation was that would continue. It hasnt

I specifically mentioned it in the first post. Why don't you go back and look at the trenches.

Smfh i get an infraction bc I point out that Rumph helped UGA land Sony!? Guy got paid, and the two main players involved are now at UM. Rumph clearly cant do CRAP without a bag. If i get banned for saying that, then shame on CIS.

I honestly think we could have a class full of 5 Stars, and some would call the class a failure bc we missed on TC.

We close with Silvera, Briggs, Chatman, Ezzard, and Chatfield and this is the best class in a decade. No way this class is a failure bc of one player (albeit, a very special player).

This X10000000!

HORRIBLY COACHED? WOW. I have officially heard it all now. Maybe Pete shouldnt put out that "Work part 2" yet. This board might go under if some of yall hear anymore bad news. You guys are starting to say crazy **** now.

Man these posts are so dumb. Even with an elite front 7, you can’t win a title or succeed in the playoffs without a great secondary.

Everyone keeps saying DT DT DT disregarding elite secondaries. This is college football, you can have both. And we should have both.

Yup. It shouldn't be a question of one or the other. No reason a program of our calibre in our location shouldn't be loaded everywhere.

Some might say a defense is as good as its weakest link. However, if I have to choose between a top DL and a top secondary, I'll choose the top DL every time. Nothing is as disheartening as having an opponent continually blow you off the line of scrimmage.

Of course we should always have a loaded secondary given the way So Florida produces DB talent.

Yeah you need everything because an offense is going to target your weakest area. However it's really disheartening to have an OL continually push back your DL. For that reason, I think DL is probably more important.

Herbie says thav about every dam kid he covers, doesn’t change the fact he gets worked by quiker wideouts which is ok he bullies the bigger guys so im not knocking him completely he just has some flaws

Dean has been a huge disappointment, there is a reason he aint starting and not seeing the field at all

Young yes is a three star recuit and is maxed but that aint any better we need playmakers back there we need those elite athletes back there the guys we have outside of bandy have a lot of flaws

Every elite defense isn't going to win every battle...they however will win a high percentage of them, especially when they need to win...if a Quarterback can't get the ball off that helps. Then the quarterback starts to force balls, and forced balls equal bad decisions. Then Coaches start to change their game plan against ya, before the game starts because they scared. Then Coaches lose confidence in the the quarterback or the offensive line. Malik young is a decent cornerback. As you saw, when we started to lose defensove players late in the season, maliks started to get exposed, cause we didn't get much pressure. Our turnovers even decreased at the end due to no pressure. When Miami was healthy, it wasn't a team in the country that had more pressure on a qb than we had.Give me these defensive lineman, and they make average cornerbacks into great cornerbacks. The roles could switch and you could say corners cause coverage sacks, but most the time it's the defensive 7 that's causing the quarterback to make bad decisions with pressure...

Not to be that guy but Young fell off as the year went on and I’m not sure Dean improved.......lots can happen in an offseason, but those 4 aren’t exactly Clemson’s stud DLmen returning in terms of quality.

Yes DLine is more important, this is true.

BUT... this was a layup for Rumph, and he couldn't deliver a guy he has known for 10 ******* years, and has coached at 2 different levels in his development.

Rumph is 100% a liability recruiting, and anyone who doesn't see it is blind.

He does a great job getting these guys to play at a high level, but we need a guy who can do both.

This is still an amazing class, but it could have been legendary with adding 2 of Campbell, Surtain, Jobe or Samuels which was "the plan" all year (Jobe and Campbell, which was the reason we screwed ourselves by slow playing Samuels).

Got to land 2 out of Stevenson, Dent and Sanguetti(sp?) for 2019, and you know they will be a battle with Baga and others coming after them hard.

And you better believe Saban will have a better grasp on the early signing period this cycle.
