second half dominance defensively

They don't lie, but they can mislead. VT scored more than their season average so far in last game. Only other 2 times they scored more than 30 is against Marshall and ODU.

What i give Guidry his flowers for is his mastery in masking our deficiencies. But VT test drove the **** out of it before the adjustment.

Don't you think Cam turning it over helped VT a little?

Say what you want about Guidry, but he does a really good job of fixing most issues from the 1st half... after half time.
His insights after the USF game were very cool to listen to

He was discussing how you see the film and then they never do what was on film. So then you adjust and then they go back to what was on the film

I’m sure he’s ready for his rematch with Louisville

A lot...actually. they still had to score off the TOS. But before this turns into a me moping type response, I just had an overall concern about the defense since game one. I think the stats are misguiding some expectations. But again, Guidry is performing a master class of masking.

Our defense doesn’t need to be lights out this season, but it needs to occasionally get off the field. This past Saturday, it couldn’t. 64% allowed 3rd down conversions and, despite horrific time clock management from them, they moved the ball on the final drive.

Say what you want about Guidry... if that's as sloppy as it gets this year we are in great shape.

Yes you got gashed in the running game but one of those was a 55 yard carry where your best LB hits the RB right through the hole and falls off on a clean shot and its a house call. If he makes that tackle you're looking at a 19 carry for 90 yards type day instead of 150 yards.

Still got handcuffed by the offense's turnovers. Held them to 10 in the second half and actually got a few stops. Hopefully Bain is the missing piece needed to anchor the defense and have a good showing against a mediocre Cal offense that is 72nd in yards per play and 92nd in points per game. They are coming off a bye and I'd bet Ott is fully rested and ready to go after he's been banged up all year. Another tough test.

The second half defense had opportunities to make plays and guys couldn't do it. So give Guidry credit to put them in those positions. That being said, I don't think the narrative that the defense made a huge leap in the second half is true at all. If anything, the second half just played out differently and may have looked better because of that.

Please don’t forget to include that they also benefitted largely from two Cam Ward turnovers in that first half also. So while mentioning that test drive, be sure to also mention that Cam Ward was the co-pilot.

What about the times when Miami offense responded and scored and the defense still let Va tech get whatever they wanted. Not an excuse
Or like that one time, at band camp?

We turned the ball over three times. VT scored off two of them and corched themselves out of a third (after the D held them). Two of the TOs happened as we were about score. Massive swings emotionally and on the scoreboard.

Most of us knew before the season that the defense, particularly the secondary, could be an issue. Our offense is so good that they will overcome just about anything… as long as we don’t turn the ball over.

Concerns at DT and CB dominated the boards all offseason

Whelp. That’s what we saw.

Guidry is having to do with the secondary what he had to do with the DL last year. I don’t think the personnel is that bad, but now we have guys in the wrong spots because we have no other choice

Thankfully we picked up Hill in the portal but we needed at least one more impact player there. The portal was a huge success for us but that one still stings

Those are also two of the more difficult positions to find elite talent.
