Searels looking to find the right mix at OL

I really like the idea of three seniors being our top reserves on the OL.

It would mean that the younger guys in front of them (Donaldson, Brown, Gauthier, St. Louis) are all ready to kick some ***.

Who would've thought Alex Gall was the key to our oline last year. Once we put him in the middle he anchored everything else. I agree that Linder doesn't need to be anywhere near the starting 5. Let him heal and then use him how he was used as a freshman, back up role at guard where he can be effective.

I like McDermott and think he'll be fine wherever he plays.

But if Brown can supplant him and lock down the LT position, with Donaldson at RG and St. Louis at RT...

Add some Gauthier at center and Darling at left guard - baby you got a stew going.

Who said brown was good?

Not me.

Just saying that if he's good enough to eventually start ahead of McDermott, Odogwu then we're in good shape.

Haven't we seen that McDermott is not a guard? No coincidence the line played much better when they got Linder out and kicked McDermott outside.

The OL improved when Linder was removed. McDermott is a good player who will start at G and help us a lot this year. And he's versatile enough and smart enough to play T if we need him there. You guys are killing him for no good reason.

They are looking at the nd game when him and linder got raped.

90% of that was Linder just getting run over. They took him out, and things got noticeably better even during that ND game.

Didn't Odogwu play pretty well 2 years ago. I remember everyone thinking he would get Kaaya killed but then he ended up being much better than expected

I'd have Odogwu on stand-by in case McDoormat don't get his act together during the games.

The Oline will be better from a natural progression stand point and based on the fact that they dont have a statue with no awareness behind center anymore.

It's a good point and we've seen plenty of linemen go from castoffs to productive, especially as seniors. Some of these guys have already played some good stretches.

I almost forgive AG for those pictures with his play last year. He was awful as a junior, but last year he might have showed enough to get a roster invite as a center.

McDermott gets roasted on here, but i think he held his own at LT. Got beat a little, a few holds, but was more than serviceable out there. I hope Sonny can give us something as a backup, but if we can roll with these five now starting, have some decent depth in Sonny, Linder, Brown, and the frosh, we just might have a decent chance up front. Excited to see if the Gaynor hype is worth it. man i hope so, i love a nasty SOB that will F you up in the middle!

The good news is we're going to have a lot of rotation for fresh legs, and our 2-deep is loaded. Which 2 start out of Brown, St Louis, McDermott and Odogwu (if healthy) is less important than the fact this fierce competition will make them all better, and they'll all rotate in. No more 2nd-half meltdowns. And if Donaldson can keep up his S&C and shift more body fat to muscle to increase his force, he's a lock to start at guard.

The best starting five is this:

LT - McDermott
LG - Darling
C - Gauthier
RG - Donaldson
RT - St Louis

The second unit:

LT - Brown
LG - Gaynor
C - Linder
RG - Herbert
RT - Odogwu

Part of me thinks that Herbert, Gaynor, Dykstra, Hillery should all redshirt.

But I'd rather see them get some snaps in garbage time than see Milo, Jones, Mahoney, Johnson out there.

'False Start' McDermott deserves a second chance with a new season however, he should be on a short leash if the underclassmen are progressing nicely.

Teddy, I'm exactly where you are. I think Vaughn will eventually be our starting LT but McDermott finished the season well and will have a sterling senior year with the improved talent around him. Also with any of our potential qb's who all have more mobility then a Kaaya the LT job is going to be much easier this year.

If the proposed redshirt rule (you can play in 4 or fewer games which no longer would have to be during the 1st half of the season and still redshirt) passes, then they could get some garbage time snaps and still redshirt.

I think the vote comes up sometime in April.
