Yeah, he should have hit the PR much harder. I don't think it would have done anything really, but at least try. I just don't think you can move the needle of public opinion when it's well-known you don't have the full backing of your conference members since 2 of the biggest brands are suing to bust out and 5 others are waiting to jump ship if they have the chance. How do you say "the ACC is on par with the SEC and B1G" when the host is just going to say "Really? Your biggest brands disagree and that's why they want out of the ACC"?ACC is fast losing any inkling that they are a major conference. They have no marketing and no vocal support. If I was the ACC commissioner I would have been on every major talk show talking down on the SEC with facts and calling out biases.
For the universities, they need to be putting boots to asses on the commissioner and the conference as a whole. At the very least a very vocal vote of NO confidence. They have been bent over 2x in the last two years, about to see it happen a 3rd time too if SMU loses tonight.
This is not to say Phillips is a good commissioner, he's not, but to think he's going to go on these shows and be able to change minds? I don't think so.
If things shake out tomorrow as expected - all at-large bids going to B1G and SEC schools (and a 1 loss ND), even with fewer wins and more losses than an ACC or Big XII team, I'd have more respect for Phillips if he started an "advisory group" with the Big XII like the SEC and B1G did with each other. And they started discussing the options available moving forward because I think you're going to see this bs on a yearly basis going forward.
