Packers gave CB Sam Shields a 4-year deal for $39 million, including a signing bonus $12.5 million, per source.

Happy for Shields. Seems like a reasonable deal for both sides. Joe Whitt Jr., the Packers' cornerbacks coach since 2009, deserves a ton of credit for the job he's done developing young talent in Green Bay, including Shields.

Good deal for both sides.

There are many who feel that Shields is already a top 10 corner, including his own DB coach. If he's not there yet, he's heading in that direction.

And to think that many of us considered this guy a total "bust" when he was at UM

It just goes to show that Randy was not a horrible recruiter, but he was absolutely terrible at developing talent.

Good for SS.

I still don't understand how this guy didn't do more here. So much talent.

Very happy for him.

I'm happy he finally listened to the staff and moved to corner his senior season... I wish we at least had 1 more year of him... You seen the potential 09... He made plays and practically won Wake 2009 for us...

Shannon didn't have a problem developing talent. He had other issues as a coach. A lot of players who played for him are doing fine in the league.

Better in the league than here=not developing talent

Like who? Shields didn't want to play corner until he realized he wasn't going to cut it at wideout... They tried to move him since his sophomore year but he refuse to move until his senior and he still showed great ppotential and made plays... Graham? We tried to get him to play football but Haith said no... We played him and for a first timer he made plays on the field... Who are these players that do so much better in the league? Most of them are performing in the league the same way they did here? I agree with LEmeyers... He had other issues and development wasnt the issue... Game planning, continuity, and administrative control were all issues but not development...
