Sam Shields

He needs to drastically improve his tackling ability/technique, but in terms of cover skills he's up there with the top corners.

This. I'm a Packers fan, so I watch all of their games. When he's on, he's as good as any cover guy you'll find in the league outside of a healthy Revis. His weaknesses come in inconsistency and run support/tackling.

From the outside looking in, it appeared that his run support really picked up when he came back from injury. Do you think he can sustain it?

I am really impressed with the improvement the kid has already shown, he's still relatively new to the position and has elite athleticism, kid has a high ceiling IMO and hasn't gotten near it.

As a Bears fan, I love Peanut Tilman, but he is way overrated. You cannot deny the impact of the turnovers he creates, but as a corner he is nowhere as good as he is made out to be from the jump. He is good against the run and good in zone. He is a straight liability in man coverage. I never expect Tilman to shut down the opposing teams best WR, he usually gets abused. So all in all I agree with Woodson.

he is on one of the worst Defenses Greenbay ever fielded......lucky he has a job this year

FWIW, here is Woodson's full list of the Top 6 of corners this year (in alphabetical order):

Champ Bailey
Antonio Cromartie
Janoris Jenkins
Patrick Peterson
Richard Sherman
Sam Shields

His one year at corner here sam was always glued to his dude.. he just never made plays on the ball..

Peterson, Jenkins, and Harris was a possibility, good lawd.

Shields did everything right his last 2 years here to give him a chance and he took full advantage. Beast on STs his Jr and Sr year, played well at CB his only year there. He deserves it, love seeing success stories like that. A lot of us thought he had a great shot to be a successful CB in the NFL

As a Broncos fan, I'd like to slap Woodson in his mouth for this comment

Shields had a good year last year after taking a step back in 2011. Taking him a while to get acclimated having his own side of the field to lock down which is understandable. I think he definitely benefited playing under Charles and Tramon for a couple of years. Its also good that Green Bay will probably keep Casey Hayward in to cover the slot instead of Sam. This will really be the year to judge. He'll have his starting position as a primary CB without Woodson looming to come back from an injury, its his to lose.

Packers fan that hasent missed a game since i was 7

From what I saw of Champ Bailey last year, he's only on that list out of respect. Janoris Jenkins is that dude. Some guys were just born for positions - like Ed Reed was born to play Safety - and Jenkins was born to be a nasty corner.

Champ is one of the greats... that's why i smh when I saw Skip Bayless say Revis is the best corner since Prime Time. I would have him in the top 10.

Richard Sherman is the best cornerback hands down in the league though imo w/ Antonio Cromartie second.

Patrick Peterson is a lil overrated and has been since his time at LSU.

Whoa, there laddy. PP is the GOODS. He has the highest ceiling. And he was absolutely shut down at LSU. Only Julio could get with him. Im still ****ed off at him too for playing us the entire year knowing he was going to decommitt the whole time and go to LSU. But lets face facts.

I agree on Sherman. He is the best ATM.

Jenkins had monster written all over him even in HS. He validated that by being a monster his true freshmen year on the NC team. Just couldnt put the green down. Left hella money on the table. Now he is making pennys when he should be making millions. I know all his baby mamas are ****ed off. Lol.

Exactly DaU! He was new to the position but he made plays his ball awareness was off... I wished he had listened to the staff and converted to corner as a sophomore, but he made plays his lone season at corner for Miami... I still remember Wake 09... His efforts on special Ted and his ability to create and recover fumbles spearheaded our comebacks... I hate when I see fans say that he did nothing here... I think Sam had made more plays than any corner the past 3 years despite not having a pick...

I'm really proud of the guy... He matured during his tenure here and did what was asked of him to make it to the league...

LMFAO at this clueless post.

Revis since being in the league is far and away the best cover corner. His 2009 season was the most dominant for a CB of all time. PFF which rates every player in the game, based on every single snap, has had him number 1 by a landslide every year since 2008 (except last year when he got hurt).

Please do some actual research before u make absurd claims.

I do agree on PP, he's not a great CB. He is consistently rated poorly as a cover CB, but he's a freak on Specials.

I care less about the NFL and NFL U garbage than pretty much everyone, but it is strange how we don't have much of a history when it comes to corners in the league. I get that the early 2000's era produced a lot of overrated corners simply because we hid them in Cover 2, but why never before or since?

We were a zone team in our glory years of the 80s. Not going to produce a ton of elite cover CBs when the kids spend all their time playing zone.

From the early 2000s, our CBs were also system specific. Tall guys who could reroute WR to the sidelines. In the NFL, these types lack the fluidity to cover all over the field. Rolle was one of our best Man-2 CBs, and was promptly moved to S in the league bc of his lack of fluidity. A lot really has to do with the system. D'angelo Hall would be a disaster on the Jets, but excelled in the zone systems of Atl and Philly.

Deion was the GOT bc he could play in any system and be the best CB.

100%. Didn't the kid run like a high 4.5 at the combine? Just shows his football acumen and that he is born to play CB as you say, he definitely doesn't get by because he is the biggest strongest or fastest.

On another note, from what I remember he was never recruited hard by Randy because he was happy with Patrick Johnson and Brandon Harris.

Shields was ranked as a Top 100 player by Pro Football Futures or one of those wonky, advanced metrics sites. Guy is a stud. And for the record, I said after his sophomore year he should be a corner in the student paper. Took another year but that is my greatest all time victory.
