Big, Fast, and physical. And he may even grow further. Not sure he has like extremely great hips or pure coverage ability or anything. I'm not saying he can't be a CB, but if you just looked at our best say 6 DBs on the roster currently, how are you assigning their positions to get the best 5 on the field the most often. Keep in mind DB doesn't rotate nearly as much as WR, and you generally need 2 CBs, 2 S, and 1 extra guy in some hybrid or nickel role the majority of plays as some variant of nickel is run like 50% of plays, and then base so only 4 DBs is run what like 20%? 6 Dbs only on field maybe 25% or less usually?
To me Lucas isn't all that different than a Stevenson, who was a CB for us but was in the Star role for UGA, and could have definitely been a pure Safety... So for me it's about just getting the best guys on the field the majority of the time. He clearly seems like the guy along with Damari that has the most variation on where we can play him. And Lucas has played Safety in HS...
Like Brantley, O'Connor, OJ are CLEARLY solely CBs. With the later two almost certainly exclusively being outside Cbs. And if you can get 2 Outside CBs and one Nickel out of those 3, that is great.
Poyser and Zaquon are clearly solely Safeties - and Zaquon is more of a box safety type (or the typical "Rover/Striker" Role). If we could get 2 starting Safeties out of those two that is obviously great as well.
But Lucas SHOULD hopefully be one of our top 4-5 DBs on the roster, right? He's certainly proven more than Damari and Zaquon, right? And clearly as of right now the most glaring/unproven "holes" on the the depth chart are second safety and nickel (depends if Brantley can fill that or if they chose Lucas/Damari to fill that).
So for those reasons, I'd want Lucas to win the starting SS job because it allows us to have the best guys on the field the most.
