Running Scheme

I expect the scheme to change week to week with the opposition. I don't like it but it seems this staff doesn't really have an identity with what they want to do on offense or defense.

Continuity is paramount in college football.

There are two new coaches on offense. A new offensive coordinator. I don't think anyone knows what the staff is gonna do until we see it.

I'd like to think the head coach is running the show here.

If you think Golden is dictating then its not a staff thing its a Golden thing. Direct your continuity complaints at him if its as simple as they are doing what they are told.

Coley, as a game day coach, kinda scares me. He has yet call plays when it matters, he only has experience with other peoples offences and doesnt seem to have a 'style' of play calling. There's no doubt he's a monster recruiter, but his lack of experience as a true OC worries me. Fisch designed plays and take advantage of match-ups and to get the ball in certain players hands. I'm not sure Coley has the experience to know how to go about doing things like that...

I cant wait for the season to start so we can see what we have, but my gut tells me there is gong to be a learning curve..

I think Coley might surprise people. I think he learned under Fisher what doesn't work because that offense there was the most underachieving in the country. I think he wants to prove he is not a product of that system and do things differently. He will probably leave a lot of Jedd's offense in and tweak it.

Fisch wasnt calling plays before he got here. He was the QB coach for the seahawks. He turned out ok i think

I'd argue that his playcalling was his biggest weakness. He was a great play designer. He was learning on the job in terms of playcalling. His first year, we barely got enough plays in. He improved on that. His second year, we'd move the ball and stall because of a lack of identity. Things may be different with Coley, but it's a reasonable concern.

I doubt we'll scrap and pulling plays. That's the best running scheme we got going. You got Henderson at RT down-blocking. You got Walford at TE down-blocking. You got the Fullback kicking out. And you got Feliciano pulling around looking for somebody to smash.

There's no way Coley doesn't keep that play in the gameplan.

Was curious about this so I watched the spring game yesterday, zone plays actually looked pretty well, OL looked a lot more comfortable running them than before (especially Bunche). There was a huge issue getting to the second level last year and that looked to improve a fair amount. Still ran plenty of power and iso stuff. I think we'll see more inside zone stuff this year where last year it was mostly edge zone plays. Duke's best plays are rarely going to come from isos and powers, it's gonna come from getting the edge and from cutbacks.

I just want to have those isos and powers in our repertoire. If our offense were a starting baseball pitcher, we can have the zone stuff as our fastball, but we need the powers to close out batters. When we got in the redzone, it was a grab bag.

I don't think play calling on offense or defense was the reason we were 7-5 last year.
Play executing at crucial times has seemed to be the issue.
A missed block here, a blown assignment there equals bad times.

I don't think Jedd trusted the OL in general in the red zone in run blocking so he ended up calling way too many pass plays. I fully expect the "power" plays will be used under Coley, I just think zone concepts will be used more often (which is strange given Jedd's background).

Our best red zone/short yardage play under Whipple was the stretch play. Different stuff works in the red zone, OL just plain needs to get better at run blocking this season.

Morris also has to get a lot better inside the redzone. If he's really going to grow into a player worthy of being a 1st round pick (based off more than potential), he needs to hit some of those anticipation throws.

Those back shoulder throws he showed in the spring game are going to help take his game to 1st round pick status.
Those passes are unstoppable.

A good sign of development, but I'm thinking more along the lines of anticipation throws over the middle, as well as touch throws. Examples: (1) over LB height, short of S, (2) over DB, short of endzone when we're in the redzone, and (3) crossing patterns that allow our WRs to run after the catch.

If not for throwing the ball ridiculously hard, he has another 3-4 INTs because of #1. In terms of #2, I think I saw him throw a fade pass almost into the stands one time last year. In terms of #3, our WRs often had to either stop or were drilled by a dart on crossing patterns.

Morris' development can and will really help the run game.

I think Jedd trusted our OL, he just tried to be the smartest guy in the room when it came to the red zone/goal line. He called passing plays on 1st and goals too many times. I just hope Coley isn't trying to show everyone how smart he actually is and just wants TDs.

that came from his NFL work...Dude almost always called a passing play on 1st and goal. I would call it....

Fisch would of did work this yr though in my opinion...he was getting use to his talent and was comfortable in play calling.

We ran entirely too much sweeps to short side of field...another nfl staple. You can count how many times Duke sprinted 10 yds and ended up with two yds and running out of bounds.

I'd like to see more draws, even qb draws...make people think Morris is a dual threat even though he isnt....Should be two qb draws a game with dude.

I think Jedd stopped calling QB draws after Morris got hurt, he scored* on one against ND and converted against NC State (I think) on 3rd down another time. Fisch timed those really well too.

Fisch's biggest problem probably was too much NFLness in his playbook. So many different concepts. Hopefully he gets Teddy next year so he can wreck **** with a real QB and not what he's working with now.
