The running scheme is something I hope that can change with Coley. Everyone knows we have one of the biggest lines in football, and we've all talked about how we should run more ad nauseum. But I think Jed called way to much east-west and zone plays when we did run last season. With all that size why not go right at the defense.

FSU ran a **** load of zone too last season with a similar sized line. I'm afraid Coley can look at Duke as a Thompson type back and I'll have to cringe watching our line running around against smaller fronts (KSU comes to mind) when we should be going right at the defense. Zone can work against lesser teams but against the stud defenses not so much imo. We supposedly are getting it in the weight room and have an O-Line coach that's gotten talented lines to kill it up front in the run game in the past. Let's send Mongo, Henderson, Flowers, ect. right at these m****ers.

Look at Florida last season, a big strong line that would wear teams down. They ran it 25 straight times against LSU when they started to move the ball. They went right at FSU and eventually wore them down with all that depth. Is their O-Line that much better then ours in the run game or was it scheme?

I will believe it when I see it.

One of these new RB's will really have to step up because I don't see anyone as good as MJ right now and we barely ran it when he was here.

One of my biggest interests going into the season. Very little idea what Coley will do.

fsu ran a lot of zone due to trickett since that was mainly what he coached at west virginia in their spread and also at auburn.

i agree with you though your line would probably be more effective going straight ahead. scheme must be one of the reasons for some of their suprising performances last year because the talent is definitely there. as canes i would be concerned about coley though, fsu offense seems like a mismatch, grab bag type offense who underperformed considering their talent advantage and some of the poor defenses they've faced. fisher was an average oc at best and coley was his understudy. the new oc is the only thing that can hold you guys back offensively. had fisch stayed i genuinely believe miami's offense would have gone to another level this year. its tbd with coley.

Thought I read somewhere (think it was one of Barry Jackson's posts) that we would be running more power plays and pulling our guards a bit more frequently.

Pretty sure Alabama's bigass OL moves guys around just fine running zone concepts.

Jedd actually run a ton of different blocking concepts, though he got away from the counters later in the season. OL struggled a bit straight moving guys on iso plays. Run blocking as a whole needs to improve this season.

"Thompson type back"?
You're kidding right. Thompson was a decent running back. Duke is exceptional.
Most talented back I've seen since ladanian Tomlinson.

When the Edge was with the Colts, that stretch handoff was their bread and butter. No worries he is just one of the NFL greatest rushers. Houston every season has one of the best running games....that zone play is their bread and butter. Where did they get it from...Mike Shannahan who only produces 1000 yard rushers from anybody he puts back there, 7th round, 6th round, doesnt matter. That stretch play is very dangerous, one over pursuit or one miss tackle and with Duke its going to the house like those two plays against BC. Once they mix it up i have no problem with it.

If you want to nit pick and you can go ahead and say that, but I'm sure most of the posters on here know what I'm getting at when I say type.

A lot of what bothered me wasn't exactly zone runs all the time, it was the east to west outside plays. Watch this first half from the KSU game. Every time Miami went up the gut they picked up a nice chunk. Every time they ran outside or off tackle (More frequently than inside) they had negative. I wanted to rip my hair out.

Agree...if we dont balance the running Stephen has great numbers and we win 7 maybe 8 games...we run the ball 10+ is possible...

If people REALLY watch closely at our failed running plays they'll see where the problem is.

Some people say we can't get push, which couldn't be further from the truth. We can get push, WHEN WE GET OUR BODY ON YOU. That is usually the issue on our failed running plays. We whiff.

Everybody gets so caught up on the impressive SIZE of our O-line but what we lack is athleticism. (on occasion)

Notice how one of our most successful running plays is POWER? Down-block. Down-block. Pull the guard. Body on a body. Bam.

It also didn't help that Mike James had horrible vision. Love that kid but I can't even count how many times I watched him run and said "where the **** is he going?" (which is why he wasn't even our 3rd & short RB)

It's about the athleticism though. When you've got Seantrel, Mongo, and Flowers, it's time to punch people in the mouth.

When the younger McDermott, Sunny, and Reilly Gibbons come on board, I think the stretch play will look a lot better.

Honestly...

Bunche and Henderson are terrible at zone blocking. (from what I've seen)

Bunche's big *** whiffs all the time.

This is why it seemed very weird to run so many edge plays. Watching a hoss like Feliciano or Bunche out on the edge, blocking in a zone scheme, desperately looking for someone to block was one reason we got to the 20 and had no idea what kind of offense we could be.

/i think we'll still see a good amount of this

Exactly.

I expect the scheme to change week to week with the opposition. I don't like it but it seems this staff doesn't really have an identity with what they want to do on offense or defense.

Continuity is paramount in college football.
