Dawson brought this play up in his presser. The USF defender essentially took a chance and it paid off. If we pull/throw it, nobody is covering Arroyo. If he runs with him, fletcher goes untouched there.

As mentioned, the issue on rewatch is we run a **** ton of wham with the TE and WRs in motion. VT would send the defender on the wham blocker in on the back side and follow the play. This means if there is any congestion at the LOS it gets cut down. If we run wham, we should do it out of wider splits IMO. The 17 yard run for Martinez was in 2x2 with no wham block and a bubble attached. More of that, please. Or we need to do some kind of reverse or sweep out of that wham action with the down block to keep backside defenders honest. They are just trailing and blowing it up

It sure didn’t look like arroyo was running motion to go into the pattern. He smashed a defender and got spun around. So maybe the defender took that chance based on film study? But in the end it’s nitpicking to an extent or maybe just selective because adds to my confirmation bias. Just feels like we’re not helping ourselves out in some aspects.

I agree with you on adding players into the run fits. What he was talking about specifically is the GT kid going rogue. It could have been a calculated guess and Dawson should keep that in mind for the future as the counter would be throwing the arrow or even a frontside RPO.

I just don't think Damien is comfortable or built to run out of the shotgun. He doesn't have the vision or the feet for it. You see him struggling to get his feet in stride out of the gun and is stutter stepping behind the LOS with not enough burst to hit a hole with enough momentum.

I worried about it this summer

My biggest question in the run game is how will Martinez transition to running out of the gun?

Oregon State was still heavily leaning on going under center. Totally different thing running it from the shot gun formation. I'd like to see his split stats based on the formation in 2022-2023.
