Mark Richt is off to a solid start on the recruiting trail in Coral Gables. After holding serve to finish up the 2016 class, the Hurricanes staff is laser-focused on creating momentum, filling needs and replenishing talent in the program. On Monday, Miami took a big step at doing just that at the receiver position, picking up a commitment from ESPN Jr.300 Rodney Scott.
Significance of impact: Miami enters the spring with a serious lack of depth at the receiver position. That alone makes the commitment of Scott a big one, given the need for playmakers on the outside. That combined with Scott hailing from Dade County makes the commitment that much more impactful. The Hurricanes now have seven ESPN Jr. 300 verbals, with five from Dade County and six from the all-important Dade and Broward County combo.
What he brings: No. 191 Scott is a 6-foot-1 receiver who can create and exploit mismatches on the perimeter with the ability to high-point the football and make difficult catches against attached coverage and in a crowd. Not just a run-and-catch receiver, Scott can maximize yards after the catch with the ability to change direction quickly making defenders miss. Adding strength to his frame while retaining and improving speed will be key in maximizing his ability.
Strength of commitment: Scott’s commitment to Miami was not a surprise, as he'd previously listed the Hurricanes as his leader and made a couple of unofficial visits since the new staff was hired. Having teammate and fellow ESPN Jr. 300 receiver/flex tight end Kenmore Gamble committed, only helps. What helps most, however, is the ability to come in and make an instant impact with the Hurricanes lacking depth at the position.
Percent chance of the commit holding: 85 percent
Biggest threat: Florida. If Miami struggles on the field this season and questions about the ability to win big in the future becomes a topic, the Gators could provide serious competition if Scott continues to make unofficial visits.
