Richt certainly not let history repeat itself a third time

Coach Richt did recruit 5 star QB DJ Shockley from the same city as Cam Newton, won the SEC championship in 2005 with him starting. A lot of ppl thought it was "politics" involved as to why he ended up going with David Greene to start most of that era. They were a good team but couldve been championship contenders if DJ Shockley was the starter for more than 1 year. Probably the same reason Coach Richt didnt recruit another "dual threat" QB like Cam Newton and Deshaun Watson, it is Athens, Ga.

Thats ridiculous. DJ Shockley was thought of as one of the best back up QBs in the nation at the time. But the reason he didnt start over David Greene was because at the end of Greene's career, he had won more games than any other QB in college football history.

And on Watson, he was going to go to clemson anyway, b/c clemson was still close to home and they ran the spread which UGA didnt.

He offered Newton as a TE? LOLOLOLOL

Ridiculous

Matthew Stafford was projected to start at the time for Georgia, and Newton was unsure if he wanted to sit behind Stafford. It was pretty much a "get on my team and I'll find a spot for you" position offer. But I don't see how this is so different than NFL scouts pestering Tim Tebow to play TE because he is trash at QB.

Could be but what I hear from high school coaches I know in the state of Georgia...there was collateral damage in the state with Richt and UGA because of how DJ Shockley was treated.

How true that is...I don't know. Could be conspiracy, could be true...I dunno.

David Greene was a red shirt freshman the same year DJ Shockley was a freshman. They battled for the job, Shockley apparently loss the job and red shirted in 2001.

Agreed!

Shockley was 1st team ALL SEC in the lone year he started

You don't see how it's different? Rick was the coach of a college team. Newton was a college prospect. Newton, as it turned out, was a phenomenal program-changing QB. Tebow was not going to do anything in the NFL as a QB. See the difference?

yeah, but to say that the reason Greene beat out shockley is b/c of "politics," when Greene goes on to win the most games of all time, is dumb.

EJ Baker. Those were my first real memories as a Canes fan frowning up in a Miami. We had another running dual-threat QB named Mike Rodriques who was later converted to WR. Coach Brodsky recruited him - I think.

He was not the first, but CMR was there early. USC had Randall Cunningham in the early 80s and Syracuse had Don McPherson and Marvin Graves in the mid 80s and early 90s.
Cunningham went to UNLV

My bad. His father played for USC.

LoL, it was his older brother not his father.

Another L for the kid.

Took those L's like a G. You sir should be saluted.

Funny thing, wasn't Richt like the first guy to train up a black super athletic qb in ward? Those types were unheard of when ward was doing his thing. Interesting he went away from it. Also, he was at the confederate Georgia!!! Let's see what he puts out going forward.

Richt can care less if the QB is black, white, or Donald Trump orange. Sitkowski is Richt's only QB target for #storm18 and the last I checked, Sit looks more like a product of the Brady bunch, not the Wayans brothers! He just want the QB to be mobile!

Yea, Perry was committed to us before Richt got here. He sees a Charlie Ward-type make-up and that has him eager to coach this kid. Perry has more arm-talent than Watson as well. Richt wants someone who can pass and think the game as a QB. The mobility is a plus.

DJ Shockley would've won more games than any other QB in cfb history too, to go along with actually winning more championships with those accomplishments. Just saying David Greene of course was a good qb but UGa wouldve been a better team with Shockley starting his entire cfb career. Coach Richt more than likely wanted him to be the starter as well imo.
