Interesting. So he kept them status quo compared to what he inherited. Certainly not a ringing endorsement for him.

But his year at FIU and years at NM on the other hand have been clear improvements from what he received.

It's an interesting gamble. I'd do it, but I'm biased as **** when it comes to rich being that I worked for him at FIU that season.

This is what I have found!

I think he is having tremendous success at New Mexico this season. I think he is a very good mid major HC.

Pitino was all of 30 when he got the Minnesota job. The MWC is right up there with the Big East as the best non-P4 basketball conference in the country and he’s gotten New Mexico to the top of that league in short order.

You’re nuts to think he isn’t ready to be a successful high major coach

Part of the problem during his Gopher tenure was he couldn't keep the top players in the state. Ben Johnson, who was a cheap hire from the start, was supposed to be the hometown guy who can recruit but he's also failing keeping those top players home. MN has a fair amount of talent for bball. Fans were happy when Richard left, it was time, but he's a better coach than Johnson for sure.

Oh that’s dope! Appreciate the honesty.

My concern with Pitino is that, sure, he has won at NM, but so have other coaches (see Below).
While NM is not a perennial national power, they have a good basketball tradition with
good following from the locals.
When looking for prospective coaches, I would hope our decision makers not only examine
the numbers (ie., Wins/Losses), but how they've won at their school and if the "how" translates to succeeding at UM, which is a different animal than NM.

No it's not. The MWC is trash, the basura bin. That **** conference was exposed last season. Six teams made the field and none of them accomplished jack ****.

Meanwhile, the BE got JOBBED with a paltry three teams selected to the field. All three advanced to the elite eight, while UCONN won it all - again.

Big East was 10-2 (.833)

MWC was 4-6 (.400)

MWC accounted for twice as many teams, six fewer wins, four more losses... If they are up there with the Big East, then I don't know what to tell you.

Fair.

I would also expect Tubby Smith, with his resume and at that point in his career (post-Kentucky), to be a better and more accomplished coach than Richard Pitino was after all of one year as head coach at FIU.

Richard is a Naismith finalist, along with Rick, and a few other guys:

Previous employment at FIU and then decent records out west... sorry wrong board.

Carry on.

Lol it's funny bc during my time working with Pitino, i met Mario for the first time and he asked me to tryout for the football team. Mario was actually very personable back then ngl.

I'm down for the fiu coaches reunion here, bring back pitino lol.

We'll see if Pitino became as tough and physical

"Retirement, Euro League, Miami (not university)."

~ Sounds like Rick plans to be in the 3-0-5. Makes you wonder if he's alluding to Rich, but I doubt it...

Rick is definitely pushing for his son to get the UM job. Rick would love nothing more than to retire in Miami, watching his son coaching at the U!

Sure seems like he likes Miami. Why else mention it? He currently lives on a golf course in a very exclusive area of Westchester. He has access to his buddy Repole, and lots of horse racing. These are things Rick loves, so for him to consider a move (even part time) to Miami says a lot.

Wonder if Rich and UM are having talks. Why reference his love for Miami?

One thing I have learned about Rick is that he is very calculated when working with the media. For instance, the way he plugged Beard for the IU coaching job. He killed two birds with one stone by saying he thinks Beard is the perfect hire for them...

By now we know that older coaches love the Miami job as they get paid and live in their retirement home all at the same time.
With all due respect to Perry Clark and Coach L, there is a pattern of older coaches and the Miami job.

Say what many folks believe about living in Miami-Dade. There are issues on many fronts for many folks who live and work in the area. But if you're loaded and set for life financially, it is a wonderful area to live in especially culturally, weather and access to other places. The area translates well for people from the northeast, especially New York and New Jersey, even if the pizza and bagels are not on the same level.

Miami seems to be going younger, which is good.

How's the NIL situation, and overall support?

The NIL money is there as long as you are winning.
Right now, I would invest the money in the coaching/basketball staff.
Miami needs a talent evaluator who can properly evaluate these kids coming from the portal to make sure their skillset fits into the philosophy of the team. I think this was the biggest problem with Coach L and the current group assembling the roster, which is why the team is so bad this season. The players don't fit whatever they are trying to do.
Also, I would like to see a former players or two to come back to the program to help these kids with player growth and development both on and off the court. Also, a strength and conditioning coach who helps the player get in better physical shape and condition for the basketball season.
The coaching staff needs to be completely revamp then a solid culture will be established.
Once that occurs and you are winning along with the arena selling out more games then the NIL money will increase.
