Recruiting under Al Golden

To some extent, I don’t blame his approach on 2011 and 2012. 2011 was a scramble just to get people in the class...we only had 2 committed when Shannon departed. 2012 came under the shadow of a potential NCAA death penalty.
Yea. He actually did find some underrated talent and he was terrible for never firing his bff and dc but dude got fu¥cked by the admin and the ncaa investigation that never ended

Golden went after (and failed) the big fish in recruiting, but he used his camps to try and find "diamonds in the rough." We always seemed to get a slew of summer commits out of nowhere every day they held one.
I remember that. The famous Al camp offers. I believe that not a single one worked out.

So I was listening to the Wide Right Podcast with Navarron and Bruce Feldman. Fledman was comparing previous coaches to Mario and he mentioned something along the lines of "Golden thought he was still at a mid major" when it came to recruiting.

@DMoney @Cribby @Coach Macho @gogeta4 @Liberty City El

does anyone know what he meant by that? What was Golden doing not doing?
All those project reaches that we took that never panned out. Players Golden thought he could take 3 or 4 years to develop. Problem was most of those players no matter the development was never gonna be able to win at the highest level of power 5 football. And then we had too many of them on the team

Well when Al was named the new coach they went out and saved that top 3 class coming in ie Jacory Travis and Ramon. Then when spring ball starts the whole Shapiro ****e started up, so he was recruiting with one hand behind his back for the next couple of years. Some posters seem to forget that. He could of ****ed off but stayed.
Are u saying he got Jacory and them to stay or are you saying he recruited them outa high school? Cuz Shannon recruited those players. Jacory was a SR when Al came. He had 1 year. Golden biggest impediment wss not the Shapiro stuff. It was being a bum who wouldn't fire his Brother in law.

When you recruit at Temple - you littlery have no interaction recruiting 4-5 stars and especially dealling with the divas in So. Flor....

Even though Jersey Has their share... the recruiting game is played differently in So florida.

Golden could never adapt.

Among that - His sorry *** defensive scheme was terrible for Miami... as well as Marky D being DC.

Pains me to say this about a Jersey Guy but **** it... he was not good here.

Oh slow down there big boy, he tried real hard to *** off to Penn St. and was also loyal to a fault with Dorito's and his **** *** scheme.

I’ll never forget Luke literally bringing them Devonta Freeman.i
Maaan I told this story on here before but it's worth repeating. I bumped into Devonta at a gas station in Tally back '11 or '12. Asked him, "**** man, why you ain't in Gables right now?" Lil bruh hit me with 3 words, "Blame Randy Shannon". I couldn't do nothing but wish him the best and let him know it's still Rocket Love.

I honestly don't know how Hurlie Brown, who actually played the position for Miami at its peak, restrained himself here.
Even More annoying was Kevin Beard actually questioning Hurley......

No one answered the question - "Is this kid who play Saftey as the University of Miami?

I mean, conversely you could say Beard knew the drill...am I gonna support the boss's brother in law or the other guy? Part of the problem with hiring your best friend or whatever is that they become unfirable and create an echo chamber.

And didn't that f-up lead to losing Cook, too?

I’d take it as evaluating and doing the diamond in the rough thing. Versus big game hunting , selling the brand and living the grind recruiting life. He wanted a “ type” too. Rather than just looking for the best , most explosive athletes. He made it way more difficult like he was at say a Temple. Just watch the back in forth with him and Hurlie about the Reeder kid. At that point you’re overthinking this ****, it’s Miami.

I mean he didn’t want D Perryman for the longest , which anyone with a lick of sense knew he was a stud. Thank god for Burrow with that.

Al had a prototype he wanted versus just being a player and a dog on Saturday’s.

Isn't Troy Reeder in the NFL and a starting MLB?

I remember Jimbo getting studs like Joyner and Ramsey and we were getting Larry Hope and Keion Payne.

LOL at his 2012 Class:

9 Canestime/Canesport/CIS Approved: Duke, Tracy, Jelani Hamilton, McCord, Bush, Raphael Kirby, Flowers, Malcolm Lewis, Isadora,

6 Worthy takes but there were others out there we failed or passed on: Herb Waters, Robert Lockhart, Rayshawn Jenkins, Taylor Gadbois, Gabe Terry, Jean-Louis (never made it)

18 undistinguished development kids: Dwayne Hoilett, Earl Moore, Jacolby Briscoe, Preston Dewey, Gray Crow, D'Mauri Jones, JaWand Blue, Jontavious Carter, Antonio Crawford (I liked him TBH), Vernon Davis, Danny Dillard, Larry Hope, Nate Dortch, Josh Witt, Ladarius Gunter, Jake O'Donnell, Dequan Ivery, David Thompson (never played football)

Every one of his classes were like this. Some super solid guys at the top surrounded by a swarm of question marks and uninspired recruits. Nearly all Golden's development kids washed out.
