Random Thoughts… Canes reach milestone

WTH...

Thanks for your kind words. However, I'm not a recruiting expert, coach or scout. Just a hardcore Canes fan like you.

Happy Easter!

There aren't 100 true commitable offers out there. The figure is meaningless.

You are right on two counts. First, I don't know which Miami "offers" are committable. Nobody but our coaching staff knows that information. Second, there are not 100 offers out there...just 102. For yor reading pleasure...

Hi jaxwhitey!

OK... Not all scholarship "offers" are created equal.

A "committable offer" allows the prospective athlete to verbally accept the scholarship. These are usually reserved for the elite athletes early in the recruiting cycle each year. Still, an athlete can be offered a "non-committable offer." This means the scholarship is being offered conditionally. The athlete can publicly acknowledge he has been offered by the school, but he can not publicly accept until the school turns the offer into a committable offer. A non-committable offer is used with second and third tier players early in the recruiting cycle.

Let's use a hypothetical example. UM badly wants Sony Michel as a running back, but Sony is still making up his mind on schools. Miami offers Sony a "committable offer," which means Sony can verbally accept the scholarship any time he so desires. However, the Canes are also interested in a similar running back, Jonathan Hillman. But UM has only one scholarship left for a running back. So, Miami offers Jonathan a non-committable offer. This means Jonathan can acknowledge that he has received a scholarship offer but can not accept until Miami turns it into a committable offer. If Sony accepts his offer, then Miami and Jonathan go on their separate ways. If Sony decides to go to another school, then UM can turn Jonathan's offer into an committable offer and he can accept the scholarship.

Confused? That's what makes recruiting such a challenge and so interesting. I hope this helped. Stay warm!

I like reading the posts by Tex.

Wonder where he's from?

UMFarArcher...

I'm originally from Maryland. I graduated from the "U" and started my professional career in Miami, then moving to different states. I landed in Texas about 25 years ago and still call it home today, in San Antonio.

How about you?

To answer the current question: No one knows which offers are commitable except the coaching staff and "maybe" the kid with the offer. This is not an uncommon occurance. Teams will offer their plan B kids with the understanding that its not a commitable offer until a point in the future. This is how the game is played at the highest level.

This was something that Coker or Randy never seemed to understand. They would spend 90+% of the recruiting season chasing their Plan A kids, then when they'd strike out, they were always late to the party on the plan B kids. Pay attention to how coach Golden is doing it. THIS is how its done.

all those guys don't have UM offers, i can tell u that.

5XNC... All the prospects on this list have received a UM "offer" (Non-commitable or committable). Just check with UM Media Relations.

UM media relations confirms all these offers? lol. dumbest thing i've ever heard. they can't comment.

5XNC... You can't really mean that... dumbest statement ever. Go away!

Hey Tex, big fan. Question, since all these guys have offers, what does the staff do if they all commit at once? I've heard of a story where the fax machine in the Nebraska AD blew up one signing day (March 2nd) because 143 LOI were faxed in at once. How would Golden and the staff handle that many Length of Integritys? How would they decide, of the 100+ official offers out there, who we keep?

I'll disconnect and listen!!

:cigar:

where's this link to the UM media relations department and there offers to junior hs players?
