Our Canes have reached the 100 mark in football scholarship offers for the 2014 class. We now stand at 101 “offers.” Last year, under restrictions brought on by the ncaa investigation, Miami offered a total of 179 scholarships. We are projecting the Canes will offer more than 200 scholarships in this class. We are halfway there.

Hi CaneInTheHouse...

Simple question...complex answer. Let me try...

1. A school is limited to a total of 85 scholarships. This rule overrides all others.
2. Each class is limited to 25 scholarships, if it doesn't take you over 85 total.
3. The ncaa allows you to go over the 25 limit by 3 scholarships to account for players that may not qualify. Again, you can't go over the 85 total.

Two years ago, UM signed 32 to scholarships. Four of them never made it to the U for various reasons. For example, during that coming year one player in the class transferred (Davis). Three didn't qualify. So, Miami finished with 28 scollys in that class. It brought them back to the maximum 85 allowed.

Roster management is complicated and very fluid. Schools that manage it well are usually very competitive. Roster management and excellent talent evaluation mean as much as good coaching in sustaining a competitive program.

Clear as mud? I'm totally confused again!

I do not believe there is a limit to how many scholarships they can OFFER. The info Tex posted above is related to how many they can SIGN.

Hi SFbayCane...

You are absolutely correct. There is no limit to how many we can "offer," just how many we can sign to LOI. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

There is also a limit on how many kids we can bring in on official visits.

What is a LOI and who signs them?

LOI stands for "Letter of Intent." The student-athlete and the university sign the document. It's sorta like a one year contract. LOI can't be signed by the student-athlete before national signing day, usually the first week of February each year for football.

UPDATE - If the student-athlete is under 21, his parents or legal guardian must sign it with him. I forgot about that detail earlier. Opps!

This is incorrect. LOI stands for "Length of Integrity." Each athlete receives a Length of Integrity via mail 3 weeks before signing day (March 2nd every year), and only a male over 25 in his family can sign it for him. They can check a box for 1-4 years on how long they plan on playing for the school.

WhatTheHell...

LOL!!! That's good. Very creative. Here's the actual definition provided by the NCAA.

"What is the National Letter of Intent (NLI)?

The NLI is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an NLI member institution

A prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the institution full-time for one academic year (two semesters or three quarters).

The institution agrees to provide athletics financial aid for one academic year (two semesters or three quarters).

Basic penalty for not fulfilling the NLI agreement: A student-athlete has to serve one year in residence (full-time, two semesters or three quarters) at the next NLI member institution and lose one season of competition in all sports."

Jack off. Find something else to do. Tex puts a lot of work into his craft. If you don't like it, don't be a jerk and post crap like this, don't read it, move on.
