Quick thoughts on the first spring practice

Interested to hear why you think J. Young ends up a rush end.

He was a defensive end for much of his high school career and is an excellent pass rusher. He's already 230+ and has enough strength to hold up.

I'm not saying he can't be a MIKE, just that rush end is the safer projection.

Rush end? Ummmm no. ILB
By the way those "rush ends" are really just OLB'ers. The terminology mix ups in the 50 front drives me crazy. Depending on the offensive look you can drop one into coverage. There are some really cool blitz packages out of it too. I wish we'd either stick with it or go back to a 4-3, but or the other.

Ryan Williams is the head clear cut starter right now. Olsen still seems a step back. But he also made some nice throw. William completed mostly all of his passes. Even in the mini scrimmage he threw the deep ball to Kidd for 30 yards and Scott for 40. He also called a couple good audibles.

That's something we haven't seen in a long, long time. A really smart kid checking down.

I think McCord should be playing SAM and Figs should move to Will.

LB depth chart IMO
SAM
  1. Tyriq McCord JR
  2. Thurston Armbrister RJR
  3. Demetrius Jackson FR
  4. Mike Smith FR

ILB
  1. Raphael Kirby JR
  2. Juwon Young FR
  3. JaWand Blue RSO
  4. Terry McCray FR

Will
  1. Denzel Perryman SR
  2. Alex Figueroa SO
  3. Jermaine Grace SO
  4. Darrion Owens FR

Jack
  1. Al-Quadin Muhammad SO
  2. Chad Thomas FR
  3. Dwayne Hoilett RSO
  4. Trent Harris FR

I would move Darrion from the will to sam.

most likely Demetrius, McCray, and Smith are redshirting.

I would say

SAM
1A. Tyriq McCord JR
1B. Alex Figueroa SO
2. Darrion Owens FR
3. Thurston Armbrister RJR

ILB
1. Raphael Kirby JR
2. Juwon Young FR
3. Jawand Blue rSO

ILB
1. Denzel Perryman SR
2. Alex Figueroa SO
3. Jermaine Grace SO

Jack
1A. Al-Quadin Muhammad
1B. Chad Thomas
2. Trent Harris

I dont see Hoilett being around for long. I feel with all the guys coming in, it might push him out the door.We shall see. Can say the same for Blue. Which might cause 1 or 2 other young bucks to play like Jackson, Smith or McCray.

Chad is going to play a LOT.

I put Muhammad and Chad as 1a and 1b cause i see rotation there. And I see chad or muhammad playing some 3-4 end as well as jack.

I also put McCord and Figs as 1A and 1B for certain situations as there will probably be some rotation there too. Using Figs in certain situations as well as McCord.

I also expect in certain situations or sets. Just because I have Figueroa behind perryman doesnt mean he wont play a lot as if he was a starter in the 3-4. He can get time on the outsides in the 3-4 as well as the inside.

Jermaine Grace will see a lot more time in our 4-3 sets or when we need a guy on the outside to cover. He will see a lot of time.

In a 4-3.... my starters would be Perryman, Kirby and Figs. With Grace, Young and Owens as second string. And obviously McCord, Chad and AQM, Harris and the other young bucks would play DE.

I am not that high on armbrister, sorry. seen enough. Been here 3 years. not the answer.

This year we are much more set to play 3-4 than previous years. It can be effective.

We should use the 4-3 and 3-4 situationally. I could also see some 5-2 being run, dont be shocked.

nice write-up, just hope you are wrong with Hoillet and Blue, never have enough experienced depth. This is a violent sport. they may not be Chad or the others, but they can contribute on special teams and just in case situations!! They will be mature players three years in.

I think one intangible that should have Ryan is his experience at Miramar high, they just had to get the ball to the play makers. Should be an easy thing for him to do now.

S.I.A.P.

In an interview by Perryman on Canesport he said that the defense is going to remain the same with perhaps a few wrinkles but not much.

Pretty much the same defense (scheme wise)

Your thoughts?

TE's, RB's and slot receivers all over the ACC are licking their chops

TE's, RBs, and slots used to be covered by LBs all the time in Randy's man 2. The difference is they were fast athletic cats, like the kind that grow on trees in south Florida, not stiff power guys.

This is a system that cannot work at the collegiate level.

so after 3 years of the worst defense in canes history we're still sticking with the 3-4 scheme... smh... yeah golden just gets it.. dumb mutha flucka is f**king up my team...

What? It wasn't my opinion that he'd be a rush end. It was D$'s perspective based on what he's seen. I haven't seen enough of him to comment and I was curious to hear his thoughts.

FWIW we were almost exclusively a 4-3 team until the UF game of this year. And then the 3-4 for the rest of the season.

Either way the lack of aggression is the problem

So you think he won't play early, or will change positions later?

I bet Jamal Carter makes a big jump this year. He got a lot better as the season progressed. I can't wait!

I don't know a lot about him, but you have to seriously question why he wasn't playing if he really got a lot better as the season went along. To tell the truth, Crawford going back to safety (assuming it happens) kind of made me question what's going on with Carter. If you have Carter, Bush, and Jenkins along with a couple freshmen, do you really need to move your second-best contributor at RB to safety?

Again, I've hardly seen the guy, but these are basic questions based on the pattern of play.

Thanks, D$. Isn't Figatron a little small for 3-4 Sam? Kid is around 240, that position requires somewhere around 255-260.

This isn´t the NFL.

I know but he looks too slender for Sam. I don't necessarily prefer the 3-4 over the 4-3, but if you are gonna play a 3-4 you gotta be able to physically impose your will on the OL. The Sam is gonna be taking on the TEs and FBs and that will be the POA side most of the time. Kid needs another 15 pounds and needs to get bigger in the lower body.

Carter should have seen more snaps last year.

Trying to read this stuff as negative as possible.

Aside from McDermott being a disappointment at center, Gall has the makeup, the intensity, the ****ing nastiness, to be a beast of a center. A few of us had that discussion when he was going through the recruitment process.

I know we have seen some senior lineman make huge strides but we have to have someone push Shane, like Wheeler did last year. Wheeler changed everything for us.

It bothered me that we never really saw Wheeler until his senior year. I just assumed he was soft big soft kid, but turned out to be the nastiest lineman we had. Maybe he was slacker but it is disturbing that he was not bigger part of team until senior year.

Ed Reed would have never played with this staff; way to much free lancing. Man would have been a total unknown today. That is what is truly sad. If Al would just understand that truth, then maybe he would realize why his D doesn't fit here.

D$,

I tell you what... That Defensive lineup you mentioned is physically imposing and ultra talented. The cupboard is no longer bare! We need to fine tune and make sure players know all the plays and where to be. If we do that and play a more aggressive scheme, there is no question we should improve. All the old dead weight, even though they played their hearts out, are now gone. No more excuses!!!!

I think we finally have the size and personnel to run the 3-4. Question is, will we turn up the heat and play aggressively, or will we sit back in a soft zone and let them dink and dunk all over us? The 3-4 is a proven scheme that has worked very well on the college and pro levels.
