Quick thoughts on the first spring practice

Just got back from Greentree. There's not much you can take from the first no-pads practice, but here are my main observations:

- The 3-4 isn't going anywhere. We lined up in it all day, and the rush ends (AQM, McCord) participated in skeleton drills with the LBs and DBs.

- Our starting defense was Kamalu and Pierre at DE, Moore at NT, Perryman and Kirby at ILB (Kirby was the weak side ILB), AQM as rush end, Figueroa at SAM, Bush and Carter at S, Howard and Hope at CB. Chickillo, Gunter and Jenkins did not participate.

- Kamalu is one of the most physically impressive players, but he's still learning the game.

For example, Coach Franklin had the DL working on techniques to use against the quick passing game. When the OL took a short-set, the other DEs knew to get inside and take the shortest route to the QB. Kamalu, however, made a slow-developing outside move, which is exactly what the offense wants him to do. Franklin spent more time with Kamalu than anyone else because he knows he has Miami-caliber ability.

- The "look test" All-Stars were Alex Figueroa, Jamal Carter and Rashawn Scott. They are lean and athletic, and they are starting to carry themselves with confidence. All three practiced with great enthusiasm and finish, and Figueroa was coaching up the younger LBs.

- The offensive line looks the part. The starting lineup was Flowers at LT, Feliciano at LG, Gall at C (McDermott was on crutches, didn't look serious), Isidora at RG and Gadbois at RT. Kc McDermott was at backup LT and Trevor Darling was the backup RG. I can't wait to see them in pads, especially Darling. He is super flexible, has a big lower-half and freakishly long arms. Even without pads, you could see the jolt he was generating from his hands. He knocked over a couple guys with his punch.

- Trent Harris was there but not in uniform for some reason. Juwon Young played ILB (lined up to the strong side) and looked big. I still see him as a rush end, but he definitely brings size to the LB corps. Darrion Owens backed up Figueroa at SAM with Armbrister in a yellow jersey.

- Funny moment: Tracy Howard made an interception in the end zone and forgot to take a knee. Coach D reminded him that they are supposed to take a knee if they catch it moving back and try to return it if they catch it moving forward. Howard said "****," looked over to his mom on the sideline and apologized for cursing.

- The team had a short but fast-paced scrimmage at the end. The highlights were two great breaks on the ball by Ray Lewis III and a juggling deep catch down the sideline by Rashawn Scott.

Thanks, D$. Isn't Figatron a little small for 3-4 Sam? Kid is around 240, that position requires somewhere around 255-260.

Hoping Huertelou can quickly pass Moore at NT.

I bet Jamal Carter makes a big jump this year. He got a lot better as the season progressed. I can't wait!

Is it just me, or does it seem like we have way too many rush end/olb types?

thanks for update.

Thing is you need depth at that spot cause two will be on the field at all times in that set. It's a big part of your D. The DEs aren't there to rush the passer. They are there to control the OTs in the run game. Those 2 OLB need to be bring the heat and also be athletic enough to drop into curl or flat coverage.

We are building an excellent stable of 3-4 OLB.
3-4 WOLB: AQM, McCord, DJ, Mike Smiff (when he adds weight), Harris
3-4 SOLB: Figs, Chad Thomas, Darrion Owens

I think Carter will blow up this year.

I do believe Scott will pick up where Hurns left off in terms of being the "go-to" receiver.
