Quick Morgan Mahalak Update

If we end up with only Edouard as our qb it would be a fail. I like his commitment in that he has physical tools that show potential, but let's not crown this kid as potential top rated qb, look at his numbers, from a qb perspective they stink. 1-1 td to int ratio throwing the ball, less than 50% completion and less than 1000 yards throwing. Granted I know he plays for Hialeah High and he has intangibles, but from a pure QB perspective this kid needs a lot of work. Where is this belief in him being a top flight QB prospect?

Those statistics have been proven to be faulty. There are sites that say that he had 20 TD's, 1900 yards passing, and 9 INT's

His coaches/school never updated his stats with the herald

My guess is that Mahalek is not going to get offered unless Winky goes elsewhere, and we get turned down by all the other top choices.

I think they are going to offer the "wish list" first, along with the locals, and if we grab 2 from that list, we are closing up shop.

With Edouard already on board, I dont see how there is a need to offer Mahalek anytime soon. They will probably keep in touch, and see how he does over the summer, but I would be surprised if they offered him anytime soon.

So do I. Id like one of each. With that said, I think its obvious Mahalek isnt at the top of the wish list if he hasnt gotten offered yet. They obviously sent out the top echelon of "wish list" kids and he wasnt on it. From what Ive seen and read, White looks like a better grab than Mahalek at this point for a pocket style passer, assuming we could land him.

Im NOT saying Mahalek is NEVER going to get offered, but he will probably only get offered if we miss out on much better prospects. This is an area that we can be pretty choosy on this year. With Edouard on board, and the load of guys we already have, we dont have to be reaching for another QB.

Not that I know of. Kid had some pretty nice stats though, and to me, he looks as good if not better than Mahalek, and he's local. I guess my view is if we are going to take a kid like that, White is already right here. I dont see what Mahalek offers that White doesnt, but its early. This will shake out more over the summer. I could be dead wrong. We'll know who they like better soon enough.

Well 2014 qb Sean White transfered from Chamanade to the Univ School which some are now saying UM maybe avoiding their kids for some reason. Then there is the fact White is serious ND fan from the time he was a kid. An if he has the year we all know he will with the fire power Univ is able to put on the field then his recruitment will explode. I am sure ND is already in his ear, since he is planning an unOV there this summer. We also B kelly would take him just to get into the Univ school pipeline.

As for his play being better then MM , I would say they are equal but Cali Qb's have traditionally been better prepared. White has a better arm, but MM has that lightening quick release. Not mention would give his left nut to be a cane, white I am not so sure. But I do like whites composure, and I am hoping we can flip his interest in UM.

Lets see how this plays out, I would love to see White, Flowers, & mahalak all at the same UM Camp this summer.

Just spoke to a kid here In Tampa. He talked with both Coley and Carrol two days ago. Said they are going to take two QBs for 2014 class. Want 1 who can enroll early.

Sometimes they target a group of people at a position and decide to take the two (or whatever number) who commit first. I guess that's if they have them ranked more or less evenly.

I've been reading all the posts about this guy Winky. He sounds intriguing, but I'm wondering if he would come in as an ATH.

Yeah, something about those northern California QBs. We had Torretta (under the radar) and Dorsey. KW might never have been developed properly given the fact his coaches were always changing. South Florida has not been particularly good for QBs,and least not for us. All the years I've followed recruiting, I hardly ever remember a good QB we've gotten from south Florida, except for Morris, whom I like a lot.

My only question is, can you adequately train your entire offense in what are two different philosophies? You really have to run your offense differently when the QBs are so different. Doesn't that spread your coaching and practice thin? It might also make it more difficult for an opposing defense to prepare for you, but I'm wondering if we can adequately broaden our offense to include a pocket passer and a pass-run guy. I have to admit, I haven't followed what FSU was doing that closely.

Back in the early '80's, when we had a good pass protection OL but mediocre running attack, Chris Vagotis, who coached our OLs, told a friend that it was very hard to coach college OLs to pass block and run block equally well. I'm wondering how easily we can prepare, with limited practice time and younger players, to effectively run a scheme that would be much more varied and broad with two kinds of QBs.

With all the QBs we're talking to, is it possible we are bringing in two next year?

I really really think we should. Might be tough to find two top flight QB's after bringing in Olsen. Most QB's want to commit early and might not be looking at us because the NCAA and the on field performance may be too late for them.

We really need to upgrade the roster at the QB spot. Our depth chart is unacceptable IMO.

I disagree. Our current QB depth chart look like this:

Stephen Morris SR (Preseason All-ACC)
Ryan Williams Rs Jr. (Started as Fr. in Memphis and been in this offensive system for over 2 years)
Preston Dewey Rs Fr. (Under Armour All-American while injured most of his senior year)
Gary Crow Rs Fr.
Kevin Olsen Fr. (Elite 11 QB)

I believe that the top programs QB depth chart is very similar. Therefore, please show me a QB depth chart that is acceptable.

I'm not going to go in depth and trash guys on our roster. I don't like that, but let's just say you and I have different opinions about the guys on it not named Morris and Olsen.

Agree with jhal, which is why - IMO - we need to take 2 QBs rather than take 1 QB who is admittedly raw and an "athlete who can play QB". If coaches, for example, sign a 2 QB class of Mahalak and Alin, we know what this says about the guys currently on the roster. If we end up signing Alin or Alin/Winky, then I think one can infer that there's some comfort level with the Thompson/Dewey/Crow trio.
