Questions For Chip

Chip,

What are your thoughts of the fan base turning on Al so quickly?

Ridiculous. Just ridiculous. If he was able to keep Miami in the conversation for ACC championship game while with the NCAA cloud over their head THAT alone means he's going to be a good coach. Yes you don't want to see the Canes lose now with so many expectations that are seemingly up in smoke. But you have to remember, this team has been dealing with a lot, and now that the pressures are off those rough fan expectations are back and the team is dealing with an entire different beast..... the fans. Trust me, we're ruthless.

Is it the scheme or the players chip? Pick one...no loafing lol

Well..... I'm going with the scheme as the problem. For three years D'Onofrio, and Golden, have stuck with the soft zone defense to try and force teams to throw into dummy coverages and what not. A lot of what went wrong last night was due to that fact alone. The poor tackling made it more glaring. But the players are all talented and have some form of football smarts. It's just that the scheme is so easy to gameplan because all you need to do is play the short game and work yourself into the red zone and finish. Also those drag routes always are successful because they can just sit in the gaps between coverages. Golden needs to commit to a harder and more aggresive defense that implements more man defense and less zone.

Preach on brutha, thanks

I don't think our issue is that we lost so much as how we lost.

Guys looked like they just didn't care. That's a reflection of the head coach. Agree?

Fair enough, what are your thoughts on the defense and coach d?

Chip who's your favorite player on the team this year... Who do you think will be the team MVP the next four games playing lights out?

My favorite player on the team this year, as well as team MVP for the next four games, is Dallas Crawford. I kept saying during the summer that Dallas was going to have a breakout year behind Duke because of his willingness to work hard, be a student of the game, and his humility. I also said if Duke "were" to go down, Miami wouldn't skip a beat in the running game because Dallas is consistent and has one of the best O-Lines in the country. That will apply now more than ever as the scenario has finally played out, but Dallas will be great. I have no doubt in my mind. It's a matter of now can he stay healthy?

Well, that's optimistic. Foolhardy, but optimistic.

That's not foolhardy! Dallas had 137 yards on 33 carries against UNC and is arguably Miami's best red zone scorer on the offense. Mind you he hasn't found pay dirt these past two weeks, but he's overdue for a great game today. I think he'll get to 80, maybe more, as he'll be splitting carries with Clements and Edwards most likely. But to say that the running game is not going to be as effective with Duke out is foolish. That O-Line is where it all starts and they are GOOD. VT will make it tough, but with all that said I still think Miami will be able to run the ball today.

Total Team rushing: 28 yds (1.2 yds per carry)

The word of the week is going to be "foolhardy".

Disagree. Once the floodgates opened with the two fumbles and the VT fumble that they recovered in the endzone for a TD just signified it was going to be one of those nights. I agree they need more fire... but don't tell me you'd start saying, "well **** if we can't get anything to go our way then how the **** are we going to get back in this?" I've been there it never feels good

Thank you for reposting. I meant more so of should he stay or go in your opinion

Chip,

Did the University of Miami burn those terrible gray uniforms?

I don't think anyone has called for Golden to be fired. I just think everyone sees a scheme that he endorses and is fed up with what golden and donofrio are trotting out on game days. The simple question of why did marshall perform better against VT than we did is a legit question. Or why did Duke perform better defensively. Or why did wake have so many yards and points against our defense. There is a fundamental problem with the scheme and it starts with golden. No one wants him to get fired but we want to see that he is putting winning, the program and the players ahead of his personal relationships and ahead of a scheme that is an absolute failure.

Pretty fair if you ask me.

You have a very good thought here. Yes Golden is the one who employs the scheme, which is why it is important for him to show he is willing to fix something that clearly isn't working. If the team continues to struggle defensively, I think the best move Golden can make is to let go of D'Onofrio with the understanding that D'Onofrio is just as good a coach as anyone else in the country and that he has to find a new scheme. I think D'Onofrio will understand if Golden does make that move. And if so, Golden needs to sacrifice some pride and bring in a bonafide D-Coordinator that he can trust to implement that scheme while working within the confines of the program's foundation. Not the zone scheme, but being a team that leads by example. Because sometimes new coaches can come in and do their own thing. Which is why James Coley has worked out so far, he has complete control of the offense with Golden keeping watch. That's all Golden needs to do... keep a watchful eye on the offense and defense, coach special teams and be the face and recruiter of the program. If that all happens, I'm confident Canes can get over the hump. But I'm not completely giving up on D'Onofrio just yet, I'm going to give him at least til the end of the season to see how he responds.

Dear Chip,

Is Duke going to push our **** in or what?

Sincerely,
Concerned Fan

Well Concerned fan that makes both of us! I'm actually traveling to Durham for the game and all I can say is, Miami is TOO talented to let this game slip by them. The only way I see Miami losing is if they are not mentally prepared and focused. Can't turn the ball over. Can't make simple error. Have to be disciplined. And have to regain the killer instinct from the beginning of the season. Duke is at home and streaking, anything you give them when they know the Canes are coming to town won't help AT ALL. Miami gets everyones best shot cause its Miami. So this is no sleeper and now every game counts more than they did last week. And I think the team can sense that. They just need to have that chip on the shoulder and urgency.

Chip - why does Al keep referencing the fumbles and ignoring the glaring holes on defense? Both of the fumbles hurt, but they were at midfield. They werent inside the 5 yard line. VT took 5 plays to score at TD after each of those fumbles.

VT was a terrible team offensively coming into our game. They had 8 turnovers the two prior weeks, and we didn't force one. BC and Duke are better than us defensively?

No Duke is not. They have also been on the side of winning in the 4th quarter of games which is well deserved. But Al was going to go on and describe why he was embarrassed by our defense but another reporter cut him off before he could finish his statement. So shame on him for cutting off what would have been a great quote for all to digest.

Thanks Chip. It might be the optimist in me, but I hope Golden is holding off on publicly bashing his defense and DC so people will be more likely to hire him after the season so he won't have to fire him

Sorry, Chip, disagree with you on this one. Miami can easily lose this game even if they're mentally prepared and focused. As long as Coach D puts the players in horrible positions, mainly, not in the best position to make plays, we will continually see average offenses march up and down the field on us. Duke is a good team with an average offense, so they'll probably put up 40 points and 500 yards. We only beat them last year because we outscored them. We don't have Duke or Mike James, two of the main reasons we beat them last year.
