QB competition

If Williams is starting by game 1 then the answer is no.

How so? Thus far the practice reports from the staff and the media are that Williams looks very sharp and very much in control of the offense. Why assume he can't and won't just win it outright in a real competition?

I've seen both and Olsen is way better. Williams is just more experienced.

Olsen gives us the best chance to win.

So how many practices have you attended?

zero as I'm an elite armchair evaluator. Any other questions?

Thanks for the honest reply, I will give you all the credence you are entitled to.

I think most all competitions will be open this year. In the past, it made zero sense for Golden to favor seniors and players who "bought into the system" ... except for one reason. He still was trying to instill a culture around the program and really the only way to do that is by rewarding the guys that buy into it, so that the others see that if they don't buy in, they will go nowhere. At this point, I gotta assume everyone's bought in. Now it's time to win, and you don't win by doing kids favors.

Lol where did all this "he played the seniors because he felt obligated" talk come from? I honestly don't know. Was it stuff people constantly parroted to justify why the defense still sucked or did gulden actually say this? Because pulling a "senior" move like that is baby back little league bull****, ANY high level BCS coach in any sport will tell you that. It's one thing to give a a "senior" player a chance to start in the beginning of the season. However, as time goes on and the same mistakes/lack of plays are being made you make a change.

Is Al Golden having a truly open competition for the QB position?

It's a fair question. Recent history seems to indicate that Golden favors the seniors. There may be mitigating reasons for that, and those may not still apply.

based on what?

Based on playing Harris and Morris, Highsmith and others who could have easily been pulled when they were performing horribly (not buying that horrible is better than bad argument). There was also scuttlebutt about the team possibly rebelling if there was a QB change. Then the loyalty to seniors for buying into the system and rewarding them. Then there was the possible sanctions thing. I don't know if there is anything to any of this that's why I said "seems."

Insofar as playing seniors anyone who's followed football has seen a starter get injured and a guy who seemed to come out of nowhere take the lead and never relinquish it. Some coaches get so invested in a player they will overlook another's talent.

I'd be interested in hearing opinions from the posters that know and follow the OL position better than I do if the movements on the line were performance based, expectations based (Seantrel), or if Kehoe just liked to tinker as well as prepare his guys for more NFL opportunities.

Good question. Perhaps someone can enlighten us both?

then we'll have a competition.

NO he only plays seniors so next year we are ****ed

Chick, Duke, Coley are only some of the freshmen who have started over seniors during Golden's time.

Morris started last year with one wheel because Williams was that average last year.

That's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. But that doesn't seem to be the coaches' opinion, and much of the media watching practices as well. Williams has gotten very positive reviews for his accuracy and leadership, two things that were woefully absent last year. So while the coaches may have a different opinion than you, it's ridiculous to say they aren't giving Olsen a fair shot.

Look at last year. Morris couldn't even walk and was still on the field.

Morris was the best option even with a gimp leg.

IF that is true then how in the world can Williams even be in the discussion this year? Kid is about 30 by now, did he suddenly "get it" in January? I like Williams and thought he should have played last year with Morris in the tank so bad. Al didn't play him, so Al is a idiot or I am. If Williams does play and play well this year, then Al needs to return 60% of his paycheck from last year. Morris made a bad defense even worse last year and made the loss of Duke catastrophic. Never playing Williams was inexcusable if he does well this year.

It doesn't feel like it's a competition. My hopes is that Olsen doesn't give him any other choice.

Olsen is getting plenty of 1st team snaps..he is moving the team and making plays...Ryan just does it with fewer plays and less mistakes..its close but Ryan has a better grasp...Olsen will get his chances to shine plenty of them...

Williams was a 2 star that nobody wanted Olsen is Baby Jesus and a 4 star and he is G Reg's little brother...thats the only reason becasue we dont have a read on any guy or any film really

Did I miss anyone's post who has actually been at more than one practice?

Budda, I don't agree with your statement about Williams last year. I'm going with what dk72 said. Can't recall many opposing QB's last year who performed worse than Morris. He may have been a greentree all-american but he sucked on Saturdays. I can't recall a worse 3rd quarter QB at the U, or one who shunned contact as much. Well, not many, I just had a flashback of Jacory Harris failing to make it in from the one. :ohlord:

Posters on this board don't give credit to guys who were his backups. Like Morris those guys started at their HS teams, they didn't all forget how to play the position or learn how to choke on 3rd down. They may not have the magnificent occasional display of an NFL arm, but there had to be at least one who had a heart, a mind, and a previously demonstrated ability to move the sticks. If not why are they on the team?

And like dk72 said I don't think that Williams suddenly had an epiphany that put him in the lead to start. Any one of the QB's on the roster (er, student athlete list) is capable of playing at or above the level of Morris last season. They may not be able to make the 70 yard+ throw two or three times a game, they may not set records, but they are capable of making a third down play at least as well as SM's horrific record. If we learned anything from him is that big numbers don't always lead to winning big games.

We can opine all we want about William's ability to lead this team to a better record than last year, or if Olsen or Kaaya is ready to replace him. Either he performs or he doesn't.

So again here are some questions:

Is there anyone on this forum who has attended a significant number of practices (3+) who can inform us on how the QB's in spring practice are performing and competing?

Or, if there is NO COMPETITION is it because one player is the clear winner, or are the coaches not paying any attention to anyone other than the guy getting all the reps? Or, what is it that I'm not asking?

If no one posting here has attended enough practices to form more than a first impression, is there anyone who has inside contacts who can tell us how the competition or non-competition is playing out, and maybe why?

It's Williams job to lose because of experience and seniority, but if he shows he's below average during the 1st big game of the season, I can see Golden pulling him without hesitation.

I have been to 3.....I stand by my statement...Williams moves the team with less mistakes...does he go 15 for 15 300+ yards in 3 drives no but I am sure you think he should...Olsen is where HE wants to be number 1b with a smart guy in front of him teaching him to control the game, read the Defenses and learn....Olsen will be the guy but not right now..
