QB competition

Is Al Golden having a truly open competition for the QB position?

Why ask here? Go ask Al.

One thing is certain. The supporters of the one that wins the job will say it was open and fair competition. The supporters of the other guy will say it wasn't.

It's a fair question. Recent history seems to indicate that Golden favors the seniors. There may be mitigating reasons for that, and those may not still apply.

The best answer should come from the observations of posters here who have been to a number of practices, not only one. Their opinions should be measured according to the expectation that Williams, by virtue of his knowledge of the offense and his past performance, is in the drive's seat. It's his job to lose. Reports here indicate that Olsen is beginning to get serious about his role and is starting to live up to his hype. Others will get their reps with the pecking order based on practice performance.

It seems to me that coaches often get stuck on what I call the "obvious talent" and are surprised when the backup guy is revealed to be of equal or better talent. For that reason the backup guys have to be consistently better once given the opportunity.

So how about you guys who have seen multiple practices? It would be nice to hear from those who can fairly evaluate the QB's that you have closely observed. You don't have to be a QB guru to see who's getting the reps, and what the next guy is doing to show that he deserves the most reps.

williams makes less mistakes makes easy throws look easy hard throws look hard....

Olsen makes easy throws look hard ( see morris & Jacory) and hard throws look easy...
Williams is prefect for Olsen to now be the 1b in the next guy up...

Thanks, sounds like Olsen is still a work in progress. That's not necessarily bad, there was a time when the canes had several starters-in-waiting.

They are going to start the guy that is better. Why would they not?

you cant sit there and type and tell me a young athletic jamal carter who didnt quite understand the playbook deserved to sit compared to

highsmith or rodgers who were unathletic and still could not truly grasp the playbook

Exactly. With the playmakers we have at the skill positions on offense, a QB that makes the easy throws look easy, and gives the playmakers the ball when and where they can do something with it, is exactly what we need. Not saying Olsen won't progress to the point where he can do that as well as making the highlight throws, but right now a high-percentage, accurate QB who just lets the playmakers make plays is more important than a gunslinger who can wow you with spectacular throws but isn't consistent.

If Williams is starting by game 1 then the answer is no.

How so? Thus far the practice reports from the staff and the media are that Williams looks very sharp and very much in control of the offense. Why assume he can't and won't just win it outright in a real competition?

I've seen both and Olsen is way better. Williams is just more experienced.

Olsen gives us the best chance to win.

Agreed! I also suspect he would have played better instinctively.

So how many practices have you attended?

zero as I'm an elite armchair evaluator. Any other questions?

Why would he play Deon Bush (or Jenkins) alongside/over those guys and not Carter? Maybe Carter didn't even know half the plays for all we know.

I'm pretty sure coaches want to win. Most people who get paid over a million dollars for something are interested in continuing that. I think they'll play whoever they think will win games. Sometimes they'll be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they won't start Williams because they're friends with him. "Coaches favor the seniors" is right up near the top of the list of "things you hear when the fans are upset at the coach's results."
