Why are you mad she made it harder to get in? I think it was over the last few years that UM finally passed UF in academic rankings. Because of her, Golden can tell parents they are the highest rated institution in the state of Florida. A lot of times, he can say Miami is better academically than most schools he's going up against, regardless of location. That plays huge to parents.

That's if you're looking at it just from the athletics side of things. Let's not forget that is also her main job and focus - improving the university academically.

academic standards for athletes and fb players isn't higher. let's stop with that. a AA hs fb player who can qualify and who the staff thinks can make it to graduation will get offered and get in. we may be a little bit above the minimum requirements, but, don't kid yourself. those "higher" admissions standards are for regular students.

Except of course, your entire complaint list is just plain wrong. Stadium...she had nothing to do with that. The city of Miami already had their minds made up and UM couldn't do anything about it. The city wanted the space for the Marlins. "Neglecting of sports"...simply not true. She has been as or more active with sports than most other UM presidents in the past. Making it harder to get into UM. Why is that a bad thing? She has increased the reputation of UM dramatically. "Bad hires"...she's the president, not the AD. She is one of the best university presidents in the nation.

really? dk72? really ? She hires the AD which is responsible for hiring the coach along with the president. Miami has always been know for Higher Education standards. They used to work with athletes who come in below the bar ie; study hall,tutoring ect.... Alot of this problem is from previous coaches that were hired by AD's that had no interest in staying in MIAMI which is direct result from HER lack of interest in sports teams. I understand your hired to make the university better and so forth but dont kill your money maker .

By far the best prez the U has ever had. She's also more supportive of athletics than any prez we've ever had, and it isn't even close. In hindsight, the Coker extension and Shannon hiring were big mistakes, but both were understandable at the time under the circumstances. The Golden hire has and will make up for those mistakes, IMO.

Huh? You couldn't have a typed a more innacurate sentence. Forgive me if I missed the sarcasm. Many Universities presidents have been placed because of connections or tenure and not because of their competence. Also, a high majority of Cabinet positions are filled with useless dolts.

Wrong. My wife is a UM grad and my daugther is senior there now. Most of those that I know that hate her is because of her leadership. As someone who works for UM on the Medical campus, I have witnessed her less than ethical way of running things. She is corrupt, phony, elitist and condescending. And those are her better qualities.

I find it amusing that on a UM message board that is sports related/generated that the pious talk of academic rankings even falls into discussion. How many web sites are dedicated to the UM School Of Business? How many threads do the UM Law school students discuss each day? How much traffic does the Marine Biology message boards generate?

Her goal of UM becoming the Harvard of the south is a fine goal. But let there be no doubt that the Harvard and the Duke that she aspires to be, aren't concerned about winning footbal championships. I have said many times that one need not look further than the Wisconsin-UM correlation. Wisconsin used to be where we are now. A middle of the pack Big 10 team that occasionally would play an inspiring game and make it to 2nd and 3rd tier bowls. She leaves Wisky and now they are competing at a much higher level and going to much better bowls. All the while the arc has been a severe downward spiral since her arrival in Coral Gables. Facts don't lie. She has made a mess of the UM med school with her crony-istic approach and has gutted the football program.

Can she right the ship? Possibly. But all the flies that surround this program orginiate from the stink in her office. The abysmal hires, the Shapiro glad handling,the lack of support. For those that are so quick to point out her accomplishments, quit being such ******'s when her shortcomings are listed. Both are real.

If you somehow think Shalala is directly correlated to the success of football then UW isn't the best evidence to use. When she arrived, Wisconsin was a laughing stock in the Big 10. When she left, the had hired Alvarez (in 1990) and made there 1st Rose Bowl in 30 years (1993).

Huh? Look at Wisky's record over the past 10 years. For a more accurate indicator, look at UM's record starting when Coker had his players and NOT Butch's. The record and bowl appearances are disgusting and should be alarming to every so called UM fan.
