Official President Joe (the other one)

I mean I like it. Kind of wild some people bash it when the last two presidents didn’t really amount to much except for gutting football and promoting uhealth. Refreshing to see a priority shifted to what put the university on the map in the first place.

If anything it’s more frustrating seeing outsider after outsider come in and leave it worse than they found it to then be recycled within the system to some other institution or political position.
Outside of destroying the football program, Shalala elevated the school's academics to previously unseen heights. We were a top 50 school and peaked at 38 in 2008, I believe. She did well as an academic administrator although the football team was awful and the U of Miami health system was a significant money pit and racked up debt. Frenk...wasn't a huge fan of. As I said, academically speaking, we have tanked under his watch. The law school ranking is a joke. On the positive, he did turn the health system around and made it profitable and when Herbstreit bashed Miami athletics publicly, he opened his eyes and fired people in the athletic department that needed to go years ago for incompetence.

Shalala gets blamed for far too much in regards to athletics, mostly because our fanbase doesn't know diddly squat about anything and runs with narratives that aren't backed by an iota of evidence. We have allowed the BOT to get away with neglecting the department and then ignoring professionals that were brought in to change things(Hocutt sounded the alarm from day one, and it was beyond obvious that a lot of the power brokers didn't take him seriously).

Shalala should have been more in tune with what was going on in collegiate athletics, but honestly, that's not her job. Miami had a solid AD in Hocutt(Who is still widely respected in the industry) and we saw how quickly he left. Eichorst was a joke and James was the "F it, we tried" hire. I am more disappointed in the BOT and institutional donors, they knew **** well what the department needed and did absolutely nothing.

Completely true.

People forget that the DADE COUNTY VOTERS had already approved the funding for the OB renovations, and the City of Miami had a SIGNED CONTRACT with Hammes to do the work, which they paid over $1M to repudiate.

If people would just acknowledge how badly Jeffrey Lurie, David Samson, and Mayor Diaz ****ED US ALL, maybe we could have an honest conversation about the topic.

And quite frankly, I could care less who has been rooting for the Marlins since the 1990s. I hope that somebody buys the team and moves it to Las Vegas. What the Marlins ownership/management did is unforgivable.

This was proven during the basketball program success. Applications shot up
Applications shot up(as they always do anytime there's a significant accomplishment, I'm quite sure Miami being featured on a Drake video also led to a slight bump in applications too), but it's not a long term phenomenon. People love to point to this as proof that collegiate athletics should be the end all be all on campus, forgetting that in order to consistently excel at athletics, schools end up doing things that run counter to their overall institutional mission.

Should a University strive to excel in every single endeavor? Yes, but it's not an accident that most of the higher end schools have a checkered history in collegiate sports, if they are even competitive at all. I'm happy that my alma mater found a University President that has a passion for athletics, but the bottom line of his tenure will be: Did Joe build an organization that is attractive to world class faculty and high end donors. If the answer is yes, then he will be here for as long as he wants. If not, he won't survive, no matter how many titles Mario wins...

Somewhat, but Shalala was not big on allocating resources to compete when it came to Athletics and Miami fell behind their peers significantly when it came to football specifically

Tad Foote and Donna Shalala, to date, are likely the two most consequential UM Presidents in school history.

Very loaded statement for sure, but gato daddy stands on bidness.

I'll see myself out.

I would agree with Shalala. Bowman Foster Ashe was more consequential than Foote, imo.

Never heard of the guy, never went to UM, visited the campus once in 2007 (beautiful) bought some cool notebooks in the book store along with some shirts. Live 3000 miles away

I don't like it....

Settles into seat for the inevitable “He hates football, yada yada yada” takes from our sidewalk alumni. 50 bucks to the first person that calls him woke for holding a position in the Obama Foundation….
