Practice Report 8-8

If we happen to switch to a 3-4 for a few series a game, holy isht at DP and Blue roaming the middle.

D'Onofrio has said that when we go to 3-4, it'll be the rush end that stands up and plays linebacker. So, in most cases, our 3-4 linebackers would be Gaines-Perryman-Buchanon-Green. But our 2nd team, hopefully, would be Johnson-Blue-Kirby-McCord.
What about Williams or Hoillett playing in McCord's spot?

-Duke brought the fireworks today. A day after being in a non-contact jersey, he stole the show on offense. There was one point where he ran through a linebacker in a drill and the entire offense surrounded him, jumping up and down. He made people miss all day long.

-Tracy Howard made a couple tackles on outside runs. He hasn’t looked fazed at all. The QBs tested him multiple times today but no catches were made downfield on him. The only times he was caught on were on screen plays, where the tackle was almost immediately made.

-David Perry had an impressive day. He caught a 20-yard TD from Ryan Williams on a perfectly thrown ball. Rayshawn Jenkins was in coverage, but Williams put it only where Perry could make the play. He also caught a pass across the middle for a 10-yard gain.

-Maybe the most impressive performance on the defensive side of the ball was from freshman LB Jawand Blue. Blue got the 2nd team reps at MLB and was all over the field. He showed great sideline-to-sideline speed and blew up a couple plays in the backfield.

-Deon Bush looked very good in run support from the safety position. He has been impressive the last few days of practice and seems to be picking up the scheme well. He has not really been out of position for the most part.

-AJ Highsmith had a one-handed interception off of Williams. He was dumping it down to a tight end and Highsmith read it and jumped up to make the play. He seems to be turning the corner and has a great understanding of the game.

-Kendal Thompkins had a couple of drops today, including a perfectly thrown ball 15-yards downfield from Morris.

-Raphael Kirby looked good from his OLB position on the 2nd team. He got into the backfield a few times to help stuff the run.
-It was another very good day for DeQuan Ivery. He showed an incredible first step and a vicious swim move in his pass-rush, which isn’t considered his specialty. He continues to be a pleasant surprise and is pushing for serious playing time.

-Ladarius Gunter blew up a screen on his side for a loss of yards. It is looking more and more like him and Tracy have a stronghold on the starting corner spots.

when was Kirby moved to OLB? And what side is he playing? Love being able to get him on the field with DP.

Great news on Duke, Howard, and Bush. Seems like Bush is further ahead at S than some, myself included, thought he would be at this point in the season.

I don't think anything is set in stone. We have options and that's a good thing. The coaches will figure out who is best suited for what roles. And as they get more and more of their recruits, we will have all kinds of options.

Well yeah, them too. I think Hoilett is 3rd right now and Williams is playing on the other side.

I saw Perry in the Hialeah scrimmage and he "fights the ball." Isn't a natural pass-catcher; although he definitely looks the part.

I dont know about anybody else, but hearing Ivery's name pop up consistently is the most exciting news to me. Vintage, dominant 'Cane D always starts up front, and the 3-some of Ivery, Porter and Smith inside sounds good.

Thompkins indeed appears to be a Green Tree AA; sad, because he's a pretty nasty blocker for a WR.

The Canes haven't had a dominant DT in a while. These are just practice reports but I'm hoping someone emerges. Ivery's name has been mentioned more than once and he's definitely a big body.

And I enjoy the continued mention of Blue doing well. Bud Foster's loss, UM's gain.

I actually *expect* to hear Duke doing well.

The one that surprises me is TH..... not that he's in a black jersey but that he's in a black jersey the very first week of camp. I don't care how highly touted he was, that's impressive.

Excited to see what we have at CB, DT, LB, and even safety. This time last year we barely had depth or talent (DT, CB) at those spots. Crazy how quickly Golden has upgraded the talent/depth on D

Thanks a lot bro. I really am loving these practice reports. The information I get on this site is far and away more valuable than on TOS.

How great is it that two former VT commits, Blue and Lockhart, have been getting good reviews in practice

Witt's concussions were so bad that he was forgetting things when he woke up. He wouldn't remember what had happened the day before and ****.

How does Rashawn Scott look?

****, I hope he fully recovers. I hate losing this guy, he looked like an absolute terror on his highlights

So that one recruit linebacker that switched his commit from Miami to fsu on NSD may backfire on fsu. Love it. Considering we got Jawand Blue cause of that move makes me even happier. And the fact that he was a VT recruit makes it all the better.
