Post Game Recap: UNC

View as article
…and just wait for next Saturday. We ain’t seen nothing yet. Clempson is licking their chops to whoop our asses as has become customary.

Louisville and Pitt are certain losses, and I suspect that the Holes game will be an *** whooping of epic proportions.

Corch Mario has set us back even further than before. Unless something drastically changes, we are cooked for the long term.

Who’s the guy that beat buddies *** in the blue lot? I live in SC and my neighbor (UNC alum) came out to talk **** right after the game. I did the same thing to him. I don’t think any of my neighbors are very happy with me tonight. 2 really **** losses in a row that we should have won. Rough couple weeks.

Mario overthinks everything. There was a quote in one of the media articles post-GT debacle, an ‘source’ in the program saying Mario ‘focuses on too many things that aren‘t important’. Yeah, just an online sports article, but I believe it is probably true.

One result is of this behavior is the sideline chaos we saw at the end of the GT game. Tonight we see Guidry running nearly to the hashes and throwing his headset while yelling at the referee. No bueno everytime. Draws a key penalty on fourth down, giving UNC an easier opportunity to tie the game late in the second quarter.

When your coaches are undisciplined why expect anything different from your players?

Some may argue, but overthinking is a lack of discipline.

Arroyo is hurt and Williams is getting a ton of playing time. He could have had 2 catches for 50+ yards and had a TD last week.

You do realize that Iowa has like 8 of the 10 best NFL TEs and they passed for 70 yds today beating Wisky.
I don't care what Iowa did today. What I do care about is that this offense just doesn't use the TE as a weapon in the passing game. Like @Memnon said, the TE is just an extra OL in this offense and when they run a pass route it's a decoy unless on the off chance that all three WR are covered and TVD can even get to his 4th read.

He’s an extremely tightly wound micromanager & all it takes is for one thing to go wrong before everything unravels.

Super intense uptight Coaches always have this kind of negative effect on their team because they overdo it to the point where the simplest & smallest circumstances can cause their entire structure to come crumbling down due to aimless meticulousness.

IMO it’s an overcompensation for a lack of actual Coaching ability, because he’s not really an X’s & O’s guy & isn’t really known for anything except being a recruiter & OL developer. Which is cool I guess, but what happens when that’s not enough? You have to fall back on what you know & what he knows is intensity for intensity’s sake. Which causes him to overthink every single decision, which results in fckin up the most obvious situations that shouldn’t be fcked up.

We’ve all heard the saying, “it takes effort to mess this up..” that’s basically what that means. Doing too much because you don’t actually know what to do when what you normally do doesn’t work.

Even more than a lack of discipline, overthinking is a result of not understanding what is important or what matters in any given scenario or situation.

This guy thinks MC just doesn’t know/understand the game of football (in all/enough dimensions) well enough to be a head coach:

My intention is to articulate overthinking is a lack of discipline because it’s a lack of a disciplined mind. A disciplined mind can focus on what’s important and disregard what isn’t important.

I wonder what Lombardi thinks about Dan Lanning going for fourth and short twice and failing, costing his team a potential six points with two easy field goals. Then going for a third fourth and short at midfield with two minutes left, failing, and giving a short field to one of the best offenses in college football. Guess what? That offense scored the winning touchdown in two plays.

Disclaimer: The Lanning question and comment is not a defense of Mario.

That’s why you hear many successful CEOs say they like to hire people smarter than them. It might be a cliché, but the best coaches hire even better assistant coaches. I’ve never seen a consistently winning football program with a great head coach and an average staff.

7-5 looks inevitable. The scary thing is we could actually lose one game we should win and finish 6-6

What the Offense needs more than anything is diversification; It’s too much dependency on just 3 guys to make all the plays, the other WR’s need to have more plays designed to get them the ball & there needs to be more creativity in spreading the ball

@Memnon, captured perfectly. Biggest issue I had last night was this insistence on having a predictable offense. The gameplan resembles GT. No creativity and a dogged insistence on trying to find a playmaker out of 4/3/7/21. They’re all nice players but neither is that dude. And when things aren’t going well, why stick to HB dives, predictable plays to x, etc? Mix in some quick greens to Ray Ray. Throw CJJ for a few plays. Let Brashard create in space, Etc etc.

And for God’s sake, can we run a screen to BSmith or Ray Ray rather than our big WRs with no wiggle?

Sadly, I couldn’t tell if I was watching a manny/golden/2018 richt team.

And next year? Woof. We’re in for potentially another 6-7 win year, which is what this year might very well be.

Lastly, I had a sense our DL will be overmatched. Our front 4 has been fool’s gold all year and it’s finally caught up with us. We can’t get any rush out of our front 4 and LT….my oh my. Please don’t think about declaring.

I still think both coordinators are really good hires..

Defensively we don't have nearly enough talent still. Definitely better than last year. Still not good enough. A lot of our young guys aren't contributing much yet still. The main problem is speed. We have talented young LBs, but they don't play. Flagg is just what he is. He's like Jaden Davis in a way. You just know he doesn't have the speed neccessary. We have no speed at all at CB, and the young guys aren't being developed at all. Safety play has been an abomination given the actual potential of Kam and JW. Addae is by far the biggest problem as far as coaching is concerned imo, especially when you factor in DB recruiting.
DL we're still very injured and thats having a large impact. Kelly has been injured a lot, but even when he's healthy hasn't done a **** thing. Bain is a beast. But like we have nobody that is a threat at edge. And you can clearly tell we need help at DT. Taylor has an impact but isn't making any plays... Starters being injured is seroiusly hurting us here. Again we have a lot of young EDGE talent, and are getting more in this recruiting class. Young guys gotta be developed and step up though. Cause aside from Bain, none are making an impact.

Offensively, I think people are super over reacting. TVD is infuriating at times, but he's a lot better than most QBs, and is very good in this offense. Our WRs have performed very well this season, and it absolutely looks like our next couple recruiting classes are going to bring in top WR talent with speed. Our Oline has done pretty well most of the year and long term is not much of any worry. I'd say the biggest problem is the lack of the diversity in the run game, and the absolute lack of big play ability by any of our RBs. None of Parrish, Chaney, or Allen REALLY impress me and make me say 'yeah that's a starting Miami rb'... Just is what it is.

I understand and agree with the phenomenon you’re describing… but I think it runs deeper in MC’s case that he just doesn’t have the knowledge/understanding of the game as a whole to be able to really understand what is important.

Re: Lanning I wonder what the analytics say. I think Lombardi would be influenced by that. But I think Lanning understood what he was doing and made a knowing and strategic choice. May not have been the right one, but I don’t think it was “coaching malpractice squared.”

And i think what u said probably has amplified even more because now he’s at his dream job, so if he was over doing it in other spots he’s gonna go even harder(⏸️) now

Most times working smarter is the better solution than working harder. I don’t think this part will change from him, its his entire makeup he would have to become a different person

So why is he starting?
Obviously not every starter is viewed as a star by fans. Stars get discussed more, and When stars don't perform up to expectation, they get trashed more, and no position gets trashed/praised as much as QB no matter what.

Jaden Davis doesn't have speed to cover anyone deep. We all know that. So when he gets cooked deep and we all see Kam/JW doing jack **** to ever help our CBs past 15 yards downfield, I think it's reasonable to be a little more ****ed at the guys that are supposed to be "the guys". Personally I'd be starting the Brown brothers and any other young guy that is going to step up. but Devante has played sparingly early on and drew PI on like literally every ball thrown his way. Porter has been fine. Nothing too bad or good. I think he's fine as one outside CB. Couch has been meh. Personally I rather have Davis playing Couchs role and have literally anyone else at outside CB, but I'm also not saying Addae is doing a good job... so
