Possible D-Line/DT Coach

Moffitt did nice work at UM.
He played a big role in getting that team to be as physical as any in the country.
I remember the fsu game in 2000 when the noles had a 4th and short opportunity early in
the game and them trying to convert and our boys stuffed them. It sent a message to them that
this was NOT a team to bully around (I think they had that atttude entering the game).

Gary Ferman actually had Moffit on one of his sessions. I wished I saved the transcript.
He was quite open and informative and shared how he had to spend the first few months at UM teaching the kids "how" to lift before "what" to lift. He was very much into the Olympic lifting
stuff. Fun days.
He recently stopped, but Moffit has a podcast where he interviews S&C coaches from different sports. Really great info.

Coaching DLine really isn't that difficult.

You mostly just teach hand fighting & leverage techniques.

The most difficult aspect of it is getting 270-300+ guys to understand situational & assignment football. Being discipline against the run & understanding gap responsibilities.

But most of what DL's do is stuff you can't teach. It's a raw strength & effort position. You either have it or you don't. You can be the best Coach in the world, but if a kid isn't internally motivated it won't matter how much you teach & how many tricks of the trade you give him.

I honestly believe it's more a recruiter position than anything. If you recruit via HS & Portal elite DL's, the rest is up to the S&C program & the player themselves.

Trust & believe, there's no secret formula that Larry Johnson or Mike Elston, or Tray Scott teaches that every other DL Coach doesn't teach or have access to; its as simple as, the programs who consistently recruit the biggest freak of nature athletes at DT & DE, consistently have the best Defensive lines.

Back before NIL, it was more prudent for us to find a real DL guru so to speak, in order to supplement for the fact we could never land top tier DLineman. But now in the open free agency market it's a whole lot easier & simpler; Spend the money to get the best players.

If you don't wanna spend what it takes to get the best DL's, then you live with the results.

I've heard this from just every DB coach. DB and WR coaches think the line just kinda takes care of itself.

What techniques are you teaching that no other DL Coach in the country isn't teaching?

And what techniques are being taught at programs like Michigan, UGA, OH ST, Penn ST etc that aren't being taught elsewhere?

If Coaching DLineman really is as technical as you're saying, then explain why the best DL's are coincidentally only playing for the best teams?

Again, why are certain programs producing a higher number of NFL caliber DLineman as opposed to others? Is it all correlated to the fact that those schools also just happen to have best recruits at that position as well?
I haven't bothered to read through this thread much except the occasional post or two. I saw someone said all that matters for a dlineman is motor, effort & something else. I'd drastically disagree. While it's definitely necessary to have that BY FAR the most important traits and coachable moments for lineman come down to technique, hand placement, footwork, hips, & agility. Obviously agility & technique encompasses quite a wide spread. But not all dline coaches see things the same way. It all comes down to what system you're running & what you ask for out of the position. For us (especially switching back to primarily a 4-3) tackle play is pivotal. We ran alot of 4-3 last year but JT constantly calling for stunts didn't help that in my eyes. People don't give Moten and Horton credit. But both of those boys can disrupt the backfield. I'm definitely as a whole alot more encouraged by the idea of our line this year than I was last. Simply because we were so dependent on our youth at least contributing. Now we can demand a decent bit more out of them and I think blay is a **** of a pick up. Now we just gotta dodge some bullets here till the season starts and hope we don't have any meaningful departures that would offset the positive traction. Think we'll be okay. BUT it's not a given.

Hetherman better not allow Taylor to call DLine stunts period. I’d Taylor is actually the one most responsible for that, he honestly should have just been fired or majorly demoted to like purely a recruiting role. Was truly idiotic.

**** was **** near called on a down by down basis. Pure stupidity.

Are we sure it was on Taylor? I never seen a d-line coach tell his guys to run some independently of what the play calls for

I know it's been forever since I played, but wouldn't it be unusual for the D line coach to be calling stunts on his own? The DC is calling the defense and I can't see Guidry just letting JT add in twists on the line.
