Portal Profile: Darian Mensah

If that’s the case then I’ve misread your posts. I’d probably go Mateer, Moss, Mensah in that order at this moment. I do think Mensah is better than names like Arnold being thrown around and not being one and done does prop him up a bit because we can’t live and die by the QB portal every year. Two years of good consistent QB play would go a long way for the program IMO and bridge the Nickel/Coleman gap, as well as help recruiting. We’re missing on skill players IMO because of the QB situation. If Mensah came in with a good season next year we can sell another year of him as starter to skill players.
I’m on board with everything you just wrote.

Looks like the #1 need get if we could pull it off, would be nice. Dawson situation would make it good on our side if he stays.

I'm not writing this as an endorsement of Emory, nor an indictment thereof. Unless Mensah is way better than Emory, why bring him in? 3 years of eligibility left means he's the same age (eligibility wise) as Emory. IMO we need a one and done, two years left TOPS type. Otherwise, why are we recruiting HS QBs at all? It doesn't make sense. Again, I'm not Emory's dad or agent. He's a likeable kid with a mediocre arm who is likely smart. I'm not expecting another Cam Ward, but there's gotta be someone between Cam Ward and Emory/Mensah, no?

Also, Mensah only played one game against decent competition (Oklahoma) and had a lousy game. He compiled his stats against lesser competition.

Go ahead and stab me now with that shank.
There are top teams with huge NIL budgets that have qb problems. The reason being is that it’s extremely difficult to project what a qb will do when the talent and speed increase.

Neither Montana nor Bradley were elite athletes. But they processed the game way better than most.

Syracuse would be dog water without McCord and yet Ohio state let him walk.

Elite teams hoard talent because it’s hard to predict and creates a competitive environment.

If you bring in a one year rental qb that everybody wants you risk having to start him because of the money you paid.
If Emory was the guy the staff should’ve seen something by now to say he’s the starter. But they haven’t.

The problem I see with Miami is that while we may have money, we may not have the clout to tell a dude we just spent a million on that he’s here to compete.

Uga was able to get away with that a few years ago when Bennet won the competition after they got the dude from Wake Forest from the portal. Then last year Kirby goes and gets Rashada while having blue chippers on the bench.

The question we should be asking is “would we have paid for Ward if we would’ve paid Rashada?

Dudes with multiple years of eligibility should be told that they are here to compete. Hard to do that with a one year rental unless it’s a proven elite p4 starter and you have no doubt.

Right now (imo) nobody is a can’t miss prospect. And no one can guarantee what they’ll do here. They either have questionable production or questionable intangibles.

If you have to turn to excuses for lack of production then it’s a red flag. An elite qb can erase a lot of that imo.
And if you’re gonna pay a million dollars to someone then they better be elite.
Be cautious of any skill player with poor or no p4 production regardless of high school ranking. Not saying don’t take them. Just saying be cautious.

You bring up a lot of interesting points. First, I couldn't agree more that projecting QB is the hardest thing to do. Regarding paying multiple dudes multiple millions via NIL is another interesting topic.

I don't know how good Rashada is or is not. I do know that he's on his fourth team, including commitments (UM, UF, ASU, UGa) in two seasons. I don't want to go off on a tangent about him (I think he's the poster child of NIL greed - at the expense of his playing career), but I mention him because he highlights a sub plot of what I was thinking when I wrote my original comment. The NIL factor of the HS QB is something I personally want no part of. I get that it is unavoidable and part of today's recruiting game. I just see it as a massive risk given the difficulty in projecting QBs at the next level.

I agree with the rest of what you said regarding clout and underclassmen. Interesting times we're living in.

I think the staff really likes the QBs they have and I would expect them to add some depth or a superstar. I do not see them adding much else. There will also be good QBs available in the Spring window, where you know a little more about what you have.

This is where I stand. Load up on defense and bring a receiver or two in now, along with fortifying the OL.

I really don’t see a difference-making QB in the portal right now save for potentially Mensah
