My only counter to that would be if your opponent is from a low level, G5 conference or even FCS. Holding a high scoring MAC team to 10 points below their average isn’t exactly a win if you’re at a premier P5 school. That is the ultimate barometer isn’t it.
For example, teams A and B each give up 25 points in week 1.
Team B played the Iowa Hawkeyes
Team A played the USC Trojans
Both defenses gave up the same number of points but one defense held their opponent below their average and the other did not. Because teams can’t control their schedule and that necessarily impacts the stats, the best stat is how a defense did against the other team’s average.
Guardrails to prevent explosives. Very important. Saw the stat where Marshall gave up three all year. We probably exceeded that in the first half of MTSU.Three key statements from @Lance Roffers stood out to me:
1. 9/9.5 on a scale of 10 of aggression.
2. What are the similarities with Manny's D? both focus on causing havoc for the offense.
3. What's the main difference with Manny's D? Guidry's D has guardrails in place to prevent explosive plays.
We probably averaged giving up 3 explosive plays PER GAME. Probably multiple games we gave up three per half.Guardrails to prevent explosives. Very important. Saw the stat where Marshall gave up three all year. We probably exceeded that in the first half of MTSU.

Good point but I would slightly argue that very few guys on Marshalls D could suit up for our D this season. Maybe 2?...So while he was coaching in a low level conference he also had low level talent. As soon as he walks onto Greentree he has two former 5* recruits on his starting D (JW and LT) and a First team AA at safety. Otherwise it’s a pretty good metric of defensive success

Yeah, I always take out FCS teams. If I’m talking about a P5 team I try to normalize to against other P5 schools. My only counter to that would be if your opponent is from a low level, G5 conference or even FCS.
