Please go to the UNC game

Sadly, it's not an easy sell to fair weather cane fans. It shoudl be an easy sell though. This team is 3-0 and has a chance to win the coastal. They win this game and things are looking real good. Home field advantage is one of the biggest advantages you get in college football. With a young team that is going against a team that is on par with us, the home field advantage could be our edge.

The way fair weather fans look at it is that we aren't a ranked team and were playing another non ranked team. I't's also hot out. And they have to pay for parking too. They just don't get it.

What shocks me though are the posters on this site. If you live in the area and aren't working then there is no reason you should not be at the game. If you care enough to post on this site then go to the game. And don't make the money excuse. It costs $100 for season tickets. Cut out drinking at the bar 3 times out of the year and you can afford season tickets. Man, I feel so bad for these kids. The attendance is getting worse and I can't imagine after the sanctions what is going to happen. We need support or we won't be getting the top recruits and will be stuck being medicore.

Another poster who is clueless to the realities of a city like Miami and a university such as ours.

Only at Miami. South Carolina got 70,000 per game when they were 0-11 in 98 or 99. Only at Miami do "fans" put conditions on their "fandom"

We happen to have a championship NBA team, an NFL team with fans all over the world, our own baseball and hockey teams, beautiful beaches, beautiful women, plenty of culture, a small local alumni base. Miami isn't Columbia, SC.

Lame excuse. We don't compete with all those teams for fans, a lot of Heat and Dolphins fans are UF and FSU fans, and a lot of people don't go to those games anyway. It's not like the Heat average more than 20K per game. It's not one or the other. As for the beaches and women, the women in the Deep South are just as hot, if not hotter, and the beaches...please tell me you're kidding. There are 6-7 home games a year, and 300 days you can go to the beach. I know our alumni base, I know all that. 5 million people live within 50 miles of Joe Robbie, we should get more than 30,000. But I'm not even talking about the casual fan, I'm referring to the so called diehards who care enough to post on a message board, but won't go to a game because the team isn't beating everyone 50-0. That's pathetic.

I grew up in Miami, started going to games in '84 when I was 5. Went to almost every home game from '84-'96 when I went away for college. Still go to at least 1 home game a year, and 1-2 road games since I'm right near a lot of ACC schools. Family has had tickets since the 50s. Trust me, I know all about our fans, fanbase, and history. I know all about the school, size, student demographic, etc. Still doesn't completely excuse our pathetic attendance, and it's no excuse for the "fans" who only show up when we play FSU or Ohio State or whomever. If they show up then, and live in the area, and consider themselves fans, they shouldn't be going to the beach on a Saturday instead of watching their team play one of the most important ACC games to date, not just this year, to date.

No then they say it's because it not a "big" game. Reality is Miami has about 35K true fans, the rest are just casual fans that only want to "rep the 305", and think when Miami is good it makes them a bad-***. There the same one's who embrace the "thug" mentality and give a crap how many players Miami has in the pros. There's a lot of tiny wee-wee syndrome among that group.

Yes, obviously I do. I never said Miami "fans" would start coming out to games against UNC in droves, I said it's still pathetic they don't. And th weather and beaches excuse is lame. I lived in Miami from 1980-1997, you can go to the beach whenever you freaking want. If you were a "real" fan, you'd miss the beach 6 times a year to watch one of only 6 home games per season.

Yeah just to reiterate what McGahee and 4 canes are saying, we just don't have strength in numbers. Couple that with the hellscape known as Son Life Stadium and you get 25k people at a game. This is a winning town. Very few people actually care about the Canes.

Why is it pathetic that they don't? Don't you realize that all 40k REAL MIAMI fans DO go to games? How is it pathetic that the rest, who likely don't have any ties to the program or aren't generational fans, don't go to games unless we are winning? It's a function of being in an extremely diverse city where college football is a blip on the radar in most people's lives and cultures. It is a reality that we are always going to have to deal with.

Even all of that aside, how do you get UM alumni to games when most of them are from the northeast and go back there upon graduation? Our situation is VERY UNLIKE the situations at any other school. The sooner you see this, the sooner you will see reality and stop hoping that we will have a fanbase that consistently fills the stadium when we aren't winning.

I go back to what I say. You clearly DON'T know the demographics and such of Miami that well.

Because the 40,000 "real" Miami fans don't go to all the games. That's who I'm calling out, like the poster in either this thread or another and those like him who said, "F this S-hit, I'm not going based on the ND game. Look at our attendance for Troy, Rutgers and Temple in 2001. I'm pretty sure we didn't break 40,000 announced in 2 or all 3 of those games. We have 15,000 real fans that go to all games, another 15,000 that usually go, but might not for whatever lame reason, another 10,000 that will show up to big games regardless of our record, and another 20,000 who will only show up when we're good.

I/We are arguing to different things here

1. I understand why the casual fan doesn't go to games, but my point is it's still sad and pathetic.
2. I understand that even people who claim to real fans don't go to games, but I don't understand it. I don't understand the "we lost to ND so I'm not going this week mentality." We're still 3-0 in the ACC and in the drivers seat to win the Coastal. Last home game was one of the most exciting UM games in a long, long time. No reason not to go if you're a real fan, and in the area.

That's all

We couldn't fill it when we were winning, why expect is to when losing?

That's just it...everyone is missing my point. I'm not expecting to fill it...ever really. Doesn't make it less pathetic, doesn't mean people who think they're "real diehards" shouldn't be going to these games. Again, I'm not talking about the guy who became a fan because he thought Miami was cool, I'm talking about with ties to the school, who have had season tickets, who somehow are giving up after the ND game.

Not many people on here have ties to the school. And the ones who do, generally go to the games.

I never went to Miami, but I feel I have ties to the school. I didn't mean alumni or faculty or staff or student as the only ties. I'm talking about donating money, having family members who are students or alum. Those are ties in my book, but either way, my point was directed at the posters who are "quitting" because of what happened at ND. That's what I said from day 1, from the first post. That's all I was ever talking about, but people still misunderstood that.

Man, I think you really nailed it with those numbers. Miami will never have decent attendance by depending on the "real" fans. UM football is much more an "entertainment" product than almost any other college program. The only way to have great attendance is to win big and play attractive opponents at home. BTW, for those fans who are looking for an attractive entertainment product, a noon start against BCU after a crushing loss has no appeal whatsoever.

I was gonna go until that debacle at Notre Dame Im not going..*** that ****....

Seriously?

Can you seriously sit here and blame someone for not wanting to go to the UNC game after last night?

No, but then he can't blame me for calling him a fair weather fan.

I guess so.

But at what point does one feel like it might not be worth the time, money, and overall discomfort to go to Son Life to watch UNC put up 600 yards of offense?

I don't disagree, but there's got to be some gray area here. We're humans, not robots. There are real-life factors at work here for a lot of people. I go to games because it's a habit at this point. I'm having to fight off some emotions that didn't used to be there when I was younger. Feels weird but I'm not ashamed to admit it.

I live 3000 miles away and I'll be there.
By the way...the announced attendance for the Miami-Troy St. game in 2001 was 36,617 LINK

36K looks a whole lot more empty at Sun Life than it did at the OB.
