Pete...what has fundamentally changed in UM recruiting?

Butch Davis didnt want him running the defense or picking out prospects. Think about that and let it sink in. What the **** was Paul Dee thinking in giving him that job?

I think one of the reasons for him getting the job is to cover up the scandal.

This would make a lot of sense as Randy main concern seemed to be making sure the program was clean and players did well off the field.

Randy, along with Barrow, brought in Authur Brown who was being recruited by everyone in the nation. He also was one of the key factors to Sentrel ending up at UM. Randy also had ALOT of misses... I'm not saying he's an ACE. I'm saying he wasnt always inept. For some reason, as a HC, he either decided to work less and/or got lazy. He made some serious mistakes (like deciding for some reason to not recruit MIAMI CENTRAL at all).

Long story short, I truly believe Randy is a quality assistant. He coached top 10 defenses. I agree he was a horrible head coach. In a perfect world, he would of stayed on as a DC after Coker was fired but would of never even been considered as a candidate for HC

The recruiting of the Browns was all Mike Barrow.

I find it very interesting that Pete is being asked this question. I was under the impression that he just graduated high school and is 18 years old, making this a bit of a toughie for him.

+1 and that's no offense to Pete but I think Larry and others would seem to have a better understanding.

You said as a DC Randy was a great recruiter. I'm wondering where you get that opinion from that's all.

So Seantrel plays defense? Because your argument was defensive players he recruited

The fundamental difference is planning and work.

Former players he recruited. Not just JAG's either. In my line of work, I've run into a few UM/FSU/UF players and I always ask about what goes on behind the scenes in Coral Gables amongst other places. Not too many players have bad things to say about Randy when he was DC... Now, alot of younger players I run into from Florida who graduated HS around the time Randy was HC, well that's an entirely different story! This is what I've based my opinion off of...

OK that's cool. Thanks for the insight.

Randy could earn a recruits trust, and in that sense he could get targets when he had something to sell. What he couldn't do is evaluate talent at all. And once he became HC, his strategy for recruiting lacked any sense. Like you pointed out, not recruiting Miami Central, or the manner in which he alienated many HS coaches in S.Fla. That SHOULD have been his strength.

I'm not sure where you picked up the idea that I said randy only recruited defensive players well or was some kind of recruiting genius. I've bolded my main argument in this thread and invite you to re-read my posts.

Again, Randy, IMO, wasn't always some anti-social coach without a clue. During his entire tenure, Randy, at times, showed himself to be very competent. It's been a decade since UM had done anything relevant. According to some of you, that's all on Randy and that's just not true. He's definitely not HEAD COACH material, but he's a quality assistant. THAT IS MY ARGUMENT!

If Butch stays at Miami, Miami owns the 2000's...and that's real. Ain't no USC National Titles to be vacated, ain't no rise of the SEC in the middle of the decade...Miami owns the 2000's.

Another sour grapes thread. Larry, I do not know why you keep responding to this crap

Enough already

I don't think he was a bad recruiter at all and I don't think this question can be answered until at least 2 more years... Personally, I don't think even Pete is privy to that info because he is so young... As far as mistakes every coach makes them... I don't see an issue with the Central thing... Who did they have that we should have offered? I think Shannon issued lied in development... He assumed his players possessed the same motivation to work as he and his former cane teammates did... I also believed that he gave certain players too many chances, sometimes you have to move on and replace certain guys... I mean patience worked for Shields, Hank, R. Hill, D. Sharp and a few others but not for players like Reid, Futch and a few other players... He recruited well in my opinion...

"Sour grapes" thread?

Golden isn't an anti social nutjob?

People forget, as a DC, Randy was a great recruiter and talent evaluator. He wasn't always 'lost'. Something happened when he became HC because the guy was a main recruiter and one of the top asst before he became a HC

yeah? who'd he recruit, exactly? I'll hang up and listen.

/who was that poster on grassy who called out shannon's recruiting so long ago?

Butch Davis let a known cheat sink his career(John Blake). Butch's judgment isn't something you should be using to support your argument. Butch earned the name Botch for a reason.

Butch is one of the best talent evaluators around. People called him Botch for the same reason some of our fans think we should still be in BCS contention every year, because they don't understand football. "Botch" probably wins 3 or 4 National Championships if he stayed another 5-6 years.

Two things:

(1) His poor judgment in terms of John Blake has nothing to do with his judgment as an evaluator of talent. On the defensive side of the ball, I don't think even Saban can come close. Butch is on his own level.

(2) He was called "Botch" because he was easily one of the biggest cluster****s on gameday that anyone can ever watch. Some people are good on the spot and some are not. It just wasn't his thing. That said, just think about this for one second: the guy built 5 of the top 10 most talented defenses during a single decade...

...at two different schools! The last of which is located in North ******* Carolina.
Jimmy Johnson is the best talent evaluator i have ever seen in football. Butch is close, and perhaps on a par at defensive evaluations.

Side note on Randy -- he was not an awful 'recruiter ' -- he was spotty as a pure 'recruiter' -- but he was pretty mediocre at best, and i'm being generous, as an _evaluator_ of talent. That, lack of focus, effort and a plan were what sunk him, recruiting-wise.

And the thing in college is game day coaching is down the list in importance. Recruiting, evaluating, development, hiring staff, managing personalities, etc are far more important IMO. There are very few great game day coaches in college.

Yep. Great gameday coaches in College are simply on their way to the NFL. It's the type of high level capacity that makes it possible, and that's a valued commodity at the highest levels.
