Compare Shannon and Golden.
What went wrong and what changes have been made to correct things? (assuming you think things have been corrected)
I'm truly not looking to make this a Shannon-bashing thread but Id like to understand, based on your knowledge, what systematically has changed? What specifically is different about their approaches?

Golden isn't an anti social nutjob?

People forget, as a DC, Randy was a great recruiter and talent evaluator. He wasn't always 'lost'. Something happened when he became HC because the guy was a main recruiter and one of the top asst before he became a HC

Now, now. No need to mention him in a positive light for anything he did. College football fans are nuts generally. Miami fans love to talk about the "U" and we're a family. Thats until you disappoint them. Then they forget you played for the school and won a title as a starting LB in 1987 and was the DC on a title team. The 2001 national title shouldn't count and neither should all those top ten defenses. "He had so much talent and he never adjusted" Didn't he play a major part in recruiting those players? "What? Shannon sucks at everything"
Then you can insert the insult of your choice to finish the rant.

But the OP did ask a good question. What does this staff do that the previous one didn't in recruting?

Can someone name me some players that Randy recruited or evaluated that would make people consider him an elite recruiter? As the years pass on, the list becomes less and less and the stories of Eric Houston become more the norm. But, I'm willing to look at some reading material.

Butch Davis didnt want him running the defense or picking out prospects. Think about that and let it sink in. What the **** was Paul Dee thinking in giving him that job?

Butch Davis let a known cheat sink his career(John Blake). Butch's judgment isn't something you should be using to support your argument. Butch earned the name Botch for a reason.

Butch is one of the best talent evaluators around. People called him Botch for the same reason some of our fans think we should still be in BCS contention every year, because they don't understand football. "Botch" probably wins 3 or 4 National Championships if he stayed another 5-6 years.

Except that Shannon didnt recruit his defensive guys, you can thank Butch Davis for those studs 2000-2002

If Butch stays at Miami, Miami owns the 2000's...and that's real. Ain't no USC National Titles to be vacated, ain't no rise of the SEC in the middle of the decade...Miami owns the 2000's.

Please stop posting here. Butch was a monster at evaluating talent and knew when to cut bait when it came to coaches.

Two things:

(1) His poor judgment in terms of John Blake has nothing to do with his judgment as an evaluator of talent. On the defensive side of the ball, I don't think even Saban can come close. Butch is on his own level.

(2) He was called "Botch" because he was easily one of the biggest cluster****s on gameday that anyone can ever watch. Some people are good on the spot and some are not. It just wasn't his thing. That said, just think about this for one second: the guy built 5 of the top 10 most talented defenses during a single decade...

...at two different schools! The last of which is located in North ******* Carolina.

You just have to look at the talent level of his defenses at UNC....He put out several first round picks at UNC. I wish he was here just an talent evaluation type of position. Would be worth every penny.

yeah? who'd he recruit, exactly? I'll hang up and listen.

I was thinking the same thing. You don't just forget how to recruit.

Randy recruited in a bubble plain and simple.

And the thing in college is game day coaching is down the list in importance. Recruiting, evaluating, development, hiring staff, managing personalities, etc are far more important IMO. There are very few great game day coaches in college.

Randy, along with Barrow, brought in Authur Brown who was being recruited by everyone in the nation. He also was one of the key factors to Sentrel ending up at UM. Randy also had ALOT of misses... I'm not saying he's an ACE. I'm saying he wasnt always inept. For some reason, as a HC, he either decided to work less and/or got lazy. He made some serious mistakes (like deciding for some reason to not recruit MIAMI CENTRAL at all).

Long story short, I truly believe Randy is a quality assistant. He coached top 10 defenses. I agree he was a horrible head coach. In a perfect world, he would of stayed on as a DC after Coker was fired but would of never even been considered as a candidate for HC

I think one of the reasons for him getting the job is to cover up the scandal.
