Patrick O'Donnell Punter?

He used up his 4 years at Ciny...

2012 59 41.8 65 2467
2011 63 43.8 76 2760
2010 52 41.9 61 2178
2009 7 37.9 50 265

Botts was just as good last year...with a 40.5 avg.....

The contention that his eligibility has been used up doesn't seem to square with the fact that "Bearcats Nation" seems flabbergasted by his absence from spring practice.

Well he only punted 7 times his freshman year. Can't you preserve your redshirt if you only play a certain amount of games/snaps. 7 punts is probably about 2 games or one bad one

I'm sure that's what happened.

He must have gotten a medical his first year. Yeah, here it is

2009: Played in three games at punter before being sideline with injury ... made his UC debut against Southeast Missouri State punting four times for 138 yards, averaging 34.5 yards per kick with a long kick of 45 yards and one inside the 20-yard line ... punted three times at Oregon State, including a season-long kick of 50 yards.

From an article from April 6, 2012:

"Junior punter Pat O'Donnell (Lakeworth, Fla./Palm Beach Central), today's interview on GoBEARCATS.com, was a First Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2011, leading the conference in net punting average. His 43.81 yards per punt tally ranked among the Top-20 in the nation. He will be a junior after receiving a medical redshirt for his freshman season. and is one of the top returning punters in the country in 2012."

PER NCAA rules if a playe completes his Degree in 4yrs or less he can is eligible for 5yr of play if he transfers to another school and enrolls in Graduate programs. Also the 5yr enrollment will not count against the 85 scholarship roster spots. The rule is intended to promote on time graduation of STUDENT-Athletes an reward those that accomplish it. Cuse & Cincy have used the rule to land talented QB's a few years back. Cuse took the point guard from Duke and made him a QB, and The wake forest QB did it by transferring to Cincy. Miami did it with Basketball player who played center for 4 years, and then Jimmy Graham switched to Football for his 5th year which per the rules is seen as transferring sports so he the athlete can remain at the same school for the 5th year.

I say welcome to the young man, and I am sure he is glad to be out of Ohio.

Go Canes!

If he avgs around 40 and has one of the better nets, means he is booming them high where coverage can get down. Also seems good at kickoffs with amount of touchbacks he gets, Will be a good guy to have. Hopefully this goes thru

So does he count for a scholarship or not?

I read the NCAA manual and nowhere does it say he won't count against the 85 limit if he is on an athletic scholarship. I maintain he will count against both the 85 and 25 limits if he is indeed on an athletic scholarship.

I believe we're under 25 for the last class and under 85 in general. A scholarship for 1 year at the worst...sounds good.

I believe what you believe is correct. I also think some will have to seek shelter elsewhere after spring evaluations, so there will be plenty of room
