He probably just wants to be like Urban Meyer and spend his week fingerblasting co-eds. But when you are facing college coordinators like Guidry who aren’t even qualified to be HS coordinators, he doesn’t have to do much to coach circles around most HCs in cfb. Dont think it matters what talent he gets, he’ll be able to scheme up defenses that will shut down a lot of college offenses. Maybe not natty championship level, but he could easily have UNC as one of the top 2 in the ACC every year.

In an era where recruiting ability is a lot less important than having NIL money, this would be a great hire. Belicheat has to do little recruiting and even then could just hire a bagman. I said it in a thread a couple days ago - the teams that are going to run cfb in the nil era are the ones that have Xs and Os focused HCs and deep pockets. Program builders are dinosaurs. Cristobal and Dabo are coaches in the wrong era.

But I’ll give one glimmer of hope. Dabo clearly refuses to change. Cristobal has outright said he’s going to supplement the class by going heavy in the portal. Now that’s not why we hired him but it’s what he needs to do to succeed. So that’s caveman evolution. He has to get elite X’s and O’s guys (not good track record) but maybe he can show a program builder HC still has a place in cfb if he can look at HS recruiting and portal recruiting as the same means to an end.

He needs a real GM that he will delegate to and listen to. There is too much to evaluate between high school and the portal, ESD and the portal window opening a week after the season, and now allocating NIL resources between those. It is too much for a coach to take on. And no, that cannot be Dennis Smith.

Man I hate to be the guy to judge people's partner choices, but c'mon man. There's almost FIFTY years between them. Do I blame him? No. I like hot female azs too. I also am old enough that after I blow my load, I would like to have something to do or talk about with said partner other than watch her scroll IG counting her likes.
