On a couple CB targets…

I ask this honestly and not being defensive: have you seen him play? I haven't, and I doubt many others have either.

That doesn't mean he'll be good. I didn't see Terry Roberts play before he came here and stunk. But I wonder how much (earned) distrust of our DB evals is driving this reaction.

And if people distrust our DB evals, which is understandable, do they trust Ole Miss? I've seen a lot of people saying we should be more like them.
Yes, I saw some of the Kansas State, Utah (I'm a fan of KW), Colorado (for obvious reasons-Heisman battle) and Arizona State and he was underwhelming. For me, It seems like wash, rinse, repeat. Go after the Tony Grimes type (proven commodity) or a D Ponds type (young but showed he can handle the fire) with plenty of talent in the middle. I don't base my analysis/comments on other teams targets so I don't compare UM to other programs (Ole Miss, etc) just on filling our needs with players that can actually play the position.

I don't make comments based upon others (as demonstrated by my post count), I make them based upon my own assessment and experience. I played football-WR and baseball @Miami Central and in college years ago. Coached some too so there's that, like a lot of cats on the site, so not grandstanding.

Again D$, look at our track record with DB's, it's atrocious and they seems to all come out of barrels looking like this. It's DB (and WR) talent in the portal but we struggle mightily in these areas. We are actually sitting home getting ready to watch the playoffs after having the #1 offense and a Heisman trophy candidate because of the lack of DB play (among others) and it seems the staff has learned nothing.

As reported by Gaby Urrutia at 247, Arizona transfer CB Emmanuel Karnley is set to visit Miami this weekend. He is from the East Bay area of California (between Oakland and Stockton). A Miami source says he has elite length (6'3), he's twitchy, fluid, and moves like a smaller guy. "Sticky in cover age and physical. Would have made us a lot better this year."

Yikes.

Its time to figure out who is actually responsible for evaluating DBs in this program. If Mario keeps his hands out of it because it's not his specialty or whatever, time to re-evaluate. Actually, beyond time for that.

This kid has no business visiting here. Don't care if he's a serious target or not.
Can we please hire @Memnon as a DB consultant for DB evals. Because this **** is mid so far this portal eval wise

And don't pretend you made this thread for no reason. You saw the immediate response on here.
I made the thread to give you UM's perspective on the player and updated info on the UCF kid.

I expected the response. People are emotional about three years of terrible DB play. I get it. It cost us a special season. But it's a little silly that we have tape experts breaking down three plays. Just say you expect him to suck because we're bad at picking DBs. That's a safe enough bet.

Honest question- where is the sunshine pumping? I'm just telling you what they said about him. I can't co-sign because I haven't seen him. But there is a reason programs with legit secondaries are bringing him on campus. They may not be right, but they see something.

As for the UCF kid, I don't get the sense he is a target.

Dude you went into defense mode right away. Dropping Ole Miss and Michigan as recruiting him, as if that should be good enough for us.

No joke man, with each passing day you look more and more like an apologist. This is year ******* 4, the bull**** needs to stop. People covering UM need to have some balls and call **** for what it is and stop being afraid of losing "access."

This kid has college tape out and he doesn't look good. This is against UCF by the way.

Yet you're posting his HS film here and commenting about his length and how he moves like they're evaluating a high school player.

No need to evaluate and project him..he played in college already against D1 guys and he's not very good.

There's a bunch of kids out there who are in the portal and have looked GOOD against D1 wide receivers. And none of them are visiting or getting offers?

This is not about the subject of the OP, but in general:

Give me guys who played high FBS snaps and produced, not benchwarmers at big schools.
The second quote is you under the Virgil thread. What happened for this one now? Production or projection?

And I don't buy it. It's the second day of the Portal and you're giving update posts with a staff opinion on a player that hasn't produced right after this board exploded at the selection for offers, whilst players who actually produced aren't getting one.

Not buying one bit of it.

I just feel like Mario and his defensive staff try to play the "smartest guy in the room" when it comes to certain positions. CB is absolutely one of them. You never see Mario take a flyer on an OL transfer. They have to be proven and experienced. But when it comes to CB? This guy will try to scour the earth to find some hidden gem that nobody knows about and try to hype them up to be a diamond in the rough. I just dont get it. We offered FOUR Centers and all of them are proven and had good film. CENTERS! But when it comes to the secondary? He just thinks hes some scouting guru that doesnt need to go after big names....he has the "eye" for talent? Smh. Extremely disappointed.
Yup…. With minimal success if any at it smh

That's recruiting 101. You look at other schools that are recruiting a player.

If he was getting recruited by Wake Forest and Northwestern, you'd have 100 posts saying, "Why are we recruiting against these bum schools when Ole Miss remade their entire secondary in the Portal?"

Have you watched the tape? Or did you see a cut-up of three bad plays?

Again, I haven't seen him. The full tape might be awful. Arizona stunk on defense.

But I know most of the same people were saying "Why can't we evaluate portal DBs like Ole Miss?" Well, Ole Miss is bringing him in before us. Michigan is after us. What are they watching? This is a player with three years of eligibility, so it's not like they are just bringing in temporary depth.
Enough sunshine pumping. This kid sucks. There are plenty of good players in the portal this is extremely underwhelming. 0 confidence in the staff after landing dyoni hill and the kid that left to Colorado before the season even started. when we knew cb and safety was an issue last year.

I'd argue 3 CB's via the portal isn't enough.

OJ
Damari

That's the list in terms of CURRENT players on the CURRENT depth chart who are worth of getting playing time next year. You can't depend on the true freshman, especially with one of them coming off a major high school injury.

Signing 3 gives you 5 useable CB's.......and over the course of a season that isn't enough.

I feel better about Emory at QB than I do about the current situation on defense. I fully understand resources are finite but this is a clear situation where the staff needs to be targeting BOTH quality AND quantity at CB. We need legit top end talent just to STABILIZE this defense.

4 CB's
2 quality starter level safeties
1 quality starter level defensive tackle
1 quality starter level offensive guard and/or center
1 quality starter level linebacker

Those should be the top 9 priorities in the portal and everything else, including QB, should be considered a luxury. I sincerely hope these guys know what they are doing but this past season taught us all a lesson.....even a HISTORICALLY good EXPENSIVE portal QB can't save your team if your defense is dog ****.

Fortify both lines and fix the back 7. QB, WR, RB are all luxuries. TBH I don't see a clear cut Cam-type QB even available in the portal right now. Save the money and fix the other issues and we can still field a good squad next year.
