OMG Shocking!

Non-Con minus FAMU Defense:
4.1/ypp & 26% 3rd+4th down conversion rate allowed
ACC Defense:
5.6/ypp & 46 % 3rd+4th down conversion rate allowed
ACC minus dog**** (FSU & WF) Defense:
6.2/ypp & 46% 3rd+4th down conversion rate allowed

Startling 3rd/4th down allowed conversion rate... if you can't get the team off the field, D isn't doing it's job

There are only 3 teams who give up more explosives than our defense since we started ACC play:

So we can't get off the field when we don't give up an explosive on 2-3 plays, and we also give up a ****-ton of explosives. Bold strategy

Our defense looks really good at times--other times it leaks like a sieve and leaves us aghast. It really is inconsistent and seems to be mostly mental and effort/energy related.

My title says "OMG Shocking" and the reason is that per those stats what I see on the field contradicts these statistics. I'm wondering if any one in the ACC plays decent defense since I primarily watch the Canes. If anyone in the ACC comes up with a dominate defense...look out! Hoping it is us!

Every 3rd down I hold my breath. I hate watching defense this year it’s beyond demoralizing. We dominated Wake but I still felt like something could break every possession.

Our maligned defense is number 1 in the ACC defensively. 4th against the rush, 2nd against the pass and (YES) number 1 overall. It seems ACC offenses are difficult to defend and I am shocked that we are the best defense in the ACC, go figure?

Yes, Miami has an elite defense when including G5 & FCS opponents. If you only look at ACC games, we’re middle of the pack ACC defense.

Please tell me you don’t believe that.
Ya know something Go… I’m old enough to remember a time when you’d have taken those stats and built an ironclad narrative that’d have even the mopiest of mopes second guessing themselves!

The Canes defense had a good game against a weak Wake Forest team, but one ACC game against a meager opponent doesn’t make a trend and doesn’t yet give me confidence. I have been down on the defense, but I held out hope that Guidry can fix this.

Let’s see what Guidry and this defense does against Syracuse and the ACC championship game before I feel confident that we have an improved defense. For now, I am just cautiously optimistic.

Happy to see a better scheme against Wake by Guidry. It seems like Guidry has been reading you guys on CIS. We know who we are now, and the experiment of playing guys out of position stopped against Wake.

Kiko didn’t cover any WRs, Meesh played more at nickel, DP2 played outside CB, marquis and Zay played more snaps at safety and Mesidor moved to DE, CJ Clark and Moten and the young bucks saw more snaps on the DL.

We are who we are on defense. Keep it simple and avoid exotic schemes and creative matchups. No need to get cute

I have no idea what you’re talking about Epi.

I have been saying this all season but our Defense is not as bad as people say it is.

But the D is also not as good as we all want it to be (obviously).

As has been said ad nausueam our tackling is not up to par and neither is the communication in the back 7. We also seem to be so bad in key moments on 3rd down and 4th down.

That said, teams do seem to go for it more on 4th down and do things they do not usually do against other teams like Fake FGs and Punts. Or at least give us formations and looks that make us confused (offensively and punts).
We need to get better at preparing for those things especially. Hopefully Wake is the game we look back at and say we started to progress as things get better from that point on.
I will not be all sunshine and rainbows though. I know we can still regress or go back to bad habits and concerns. That is when we will need the offense and Special Teams/ Kicker to pick us up and win.
Football is about all three phases.

This

Watch a lot of college football, our defense isn't near as bad as it frustrates us, but the lack of assignments kills us, I swear, a DB is always out of sink, 3 play cover 3 and one is in man, the Wake TD Porter left is zone to cover the WR that floated into Powells zone, no one home, TD, Hill against call, lets the TE run by him cover 3, and so on

Here is your answer on teams going for it on 4th down against us more than the norm. I would have agreed with you but the stats say we are about middle of the pack

Total defense means very little...scoring defense is the real # and we suck in that regard. Games are won and lost on the scoreboard, not between the 20-yard lines
