One thing that I've noticed about a lot of SF LB's over the years, is they really struggle playing LB at the next level.

It's been that way across the board regardless of where they ended up signing, whether it be Miami, UF, FSU or elsewhere. They're highly ranked & looked great in HS & then get to college & disappear.

I can't really think of the last SF LB that's been dominant or done much of anything in a really long time.

Does it have to be P4?
Cause I've got kids killing it at the lower level. All Conference type stuff.

Anywho...

There's not a lot of ideal LB recruits down here to begin with. We don't breed 6'1"-6'2" 220lb-230lb kids who can run and strike. And many of those body types end up playing the edge for high schools down here. They likely don't get great LB coaching either. Their pass coverage sucks because HS coaches use a unit full of DB's during 7-on-7 season. They aren't taught next-level run fits. It's just "see ball, get ball". Shoot, a lot of them spend their whole HS career blitzing. Lol

That Graham kid played on the edge for Stranahan.

That's been my observation. They have great pass rush highlights so get ranked highly. But they've never actually learned how to play the LB position. Manny made that mistake a million times, taking guys who had the body types and the sack production, but couldn't diagnose plays.

In fairness, he thought GT was running the fumblerooski and find which OL had the ball....

Last one I can think of is Lavonte David almost 15 years ago at Nebraska

I mean the fact that it's not P4 kinda proves the point.

Hopefully Wes B changes this discussion.

tHANKS FOR ANSWERING I CAME IN TO SAY THIS.

In south florida its almost similar on the oline as well....

1.)There arent much LB Coaches. Flat out period. I could find you 300 personal wr and db trainers though.
2.) even if they were im not sure these guy scould actually coach up lbers. And it was the same way when i was in hs and we were a good program but we never had a full time lb coach on team lol.

3.) Sizes. If a kid is 6'0-6'1 190+ he more than likely will be relocated to Edge down here. Has always been. We have an unlimited amount of 5'9 -5'10 190 AND 6'0 180 kids that they can sit at Lber....and thats what they do. Speed is the name of the game here and all speed gets pushed forward.

Graham played mostly EDGE all through high school.

That being said we have:

Jonathan Bostic and Josh Bynes just retired i believe.

YOU CAN SEE @DMoney YEARLY LIST AT lb AND SEE THAT IT WASNT A TON OF pOWER 4 LEVEL LBS DOWN HERE AND THE ONES HAD KIND OF FLAMED OUT IF YOU START LOOKING BACK FROM 2017.

Typically ill say 2-3 hit yearly in south florida area......An my south florida flows from the Keys to the south , to west palm in the north to fort myers in the west.

Devin Bush Jr I think.

That said..OG Jr is getting a lot of criticism but he was no stud coming out of HS. Not by a longshot. So I can’t dog the kid too much. He was a 3* and is playing like it. There is a reason we passed.
Devin Bush, Diego ***ot (pause), Yasir Abdullah was all acc in 2022.
Abdullah did alot of his work as an edge rusher to though.

Some of this may be the lack of coaching support at many of the local schools. In my era we had positional coaches at every position plus an extra coach of two chipping from the JVs. Additionally, at our (and other) schools, many of the kids came from Optimist and Pop Warner programs which had several assistant coaches at every level of ball, especially from 7th grade up to 145lbers. JV and Varsity coaches were getting well-coached kids by the time they showed up to their schools. This is important with the highly-technical positions such as QB, OL and LB.

You’ll find productive linebackers if you think about

We have productive lbs at all levels. However, you raised a great point and I think it’s mostly because many of these kids don’t actually play lb or have lb responsibilities. They either blitz most of the time or standing up on the edge.

IMO, Graham’s issue is that he may need more time to develop and actually learn the position . Keep in mind that Stranahan also played an extremely weak schedule outside a couple of teams, so their players may take a little more time to develop at the next level. Same for Hakeem. They are great athletes but are raw.
